Over the past week or so, I’m seeing more threads using the new smilies.
In particular, the new [noparse]:rolleyes:[/noparse] smilie simply does not convey the idea that it is being used to convey, and that we’ve become accustomed to. It. just. dosn’t.
Several of the other new ones do a poor job too. The rest just look dumb.
Tell me again why they were changed? They came pre-installed or something with an update of the software that runs this board?
The board was updated and I believe the new smileys came with it. Of course everyone has to lose their minds because something changed.
No, some people are complaining (not losing their minds) because the new smilies look worse and some aren’t as effective. You know, an opinion developed due to an effect of something happening (not just because).

I don’t understand why we can’t get even a single moderator opinion on the matter. It’s as mysterious as the thread where we could never get an answer on why admins got demoted to moderator.
I wish we could get an answer, even if it is one we don’t like, from Tuba or Jerry or whoever. If the new smileys are here to stay, and no one can do anything about it, then just tell us that. If there’s some chance that they might or might not change back to the old style, then tell us that too. If the admins just don’t care and like fucking with us, tell us that too.
Even a boilerplate “the Straight Dope Message Board administration cannot make any comments on the new emoticons/smileys” would be wonderful.

Support for the old smileys has been added to the SDMB Avatar script. Dance Party
If you enable the option “UseOldSmileys” you and other users of the script with the option enabled will see the older versions of the smileys instead of the new, ugly ones.
Those who don’t use the script will still see the new smileys and, due to the way user scripts work, you will momentarily see the new, ugly smiley load first, and then be replaced by the older version of that smiley once fully loaded. The faster your internet connection is the less noticeable this effect will be.
It isn’t a perfect solution but there it is - an interim workaround for those who simply cannot abide the new smileys. If TPTB ever hear our anguished cries and restore the old ones this feature will be removed.
Note that in Chrome, userscripts can no longer be installed directly from the userscripts.org link above. Right-click the green 'Install" button and “Save link as…”, then drop the saved file directly into Chrome’s Extensions window to install it. Questions about using or installing it should be directed to theSDMB Avatars thread.

Hold on. I’m almost finished pulling pulling out the smileys part of the script. Just putting in a few finishing touches.
(I was going to ask Crazyhorse to do it, but it looked easy enough for me to do it, and why ask someone to do something you can do yourself?)
