OMG new smileys??!

This is not a d-mned democracy, Sir, nor a debating team!
It is a message board!

=)

It’s back… and it’s still staring at you.

No, no, oh G-d, no!

I like the table-flinging one.

Oh no! Not your œuvre!

This one’s easier to type: (o)(o)

Or heavy metal “devil horns”: \m/ (‾⌣‾) \m/

Many of the old ones are still displaying correctly for me, so I’m never going to force a cache refresh in Chrome. I still have the good rolleyes, blowjob, and others.

Yeah, but the folks you are messing wit-posting to can’t see them. =)

Yeah, the new smilies totally change the meaning of …

And …

I’ll even throw in a book of matches.

The name for the right mod/admin would do fine for now, thanks.

…as a side note, I honestly can’t tell if “:)” or “:(” was more appropriate to close out that last post.

I mean, it probably doesn’t matter either way… :frowning:

Reduced size for readability. FTR, eleven of those don’t render on my copy of Win7. None render in Vista.

Incidentally, although the pastel takes some getting used to, most of the emoticons are improvements. Exceptions are rolly and MDMAsmiley. I’d say sad and bigGrin are a tie. Winky, tongue and embarrassed are a significant improvement. And Mr. Surprised and Joe Cool have character.

I mean really, if you have to reach for an emoticon to express strong opinions, I’d say you need to work on your language. It’s unfortunate that vBulletin didn’t offer an option for varying smilie sets by post date, but only a little. That would sparked ATMB drama as well.
Incidentally2, the new smilies have larger image files: the old ones used a narrower color pallet and were probably designed for dialup modems. Though since they are all cached anyway, it matters little.

Did I miss this upthread, but did any mod/admin/muckety-muck post anything about this decision? I’m not piling on or anything, just interested.

Ok, I am piling on. The new smileys suck and make me think I’m communicating in Japanese Tweenese. But the issues brought up here are fascinating.

Interesting. 14 don’t render in my Firefox 27.0.1 on Ubuntu Linux.

None render in WinXp using Firefox 3.6.28 (yes, I’m a tad behind the technology curve.)

I think that one’s Peppermint Patty.

It’s more a font thing than a browser thing, at least. The OS only matters in that newer OSes usually have newer fonts.

There are tentative plans for Firefox to implement color emoji on all platforms, which would bypass the font issues. Of course, that’s not going to be added to the Firefox 3.6 branch.

(Early on, back when emoji were new (aka 2009 or so), there were addons designed to add emoji support, but they use an older system that isn’t used anymore.)

Still here.

Build a man a fire, and he’ll be warm for a night. Set a man on fire, and he’ll be warm for the rest of his life.

Instead of giving us “new and improved” smileys, why can’t they do something useful and get rid of some of the more useless links at the top of the page such as that Calendar link?
