The “big grin” (:D) is the only one that registers on my browser. His smile looks bigger than his face, as if it’s about the come off.* Creeeepy *. . .
Yes, creepy!
He is still looking at me, I see him at night!
Oh, Dear Moderators, please rescue us!
Chocolate or financial support shall be sent After The Fact.
=)
They suck.
I hate the bright stupid pastel colors. They look lo-rez to me, like they’re fuzzy or something. And their expressions suck, like they were drawn by a greeting card cartoonist with a hangover or something.
The sad face is purple: :(. WTF? People who are sad aren’t feeling purple; they’re feeling blue.
And people who are mad are red in the face, not pastel-umber in the face, like the new  smiley.
At least for now the :smack: is still the same :smack: that we’ve all come to know and love. Oh, and the :dubious: looks the same at the moment. Will those two be replaced as well or will they be given a reprieve and retain their familiar countenance? :dubious:
I don’t like the new smileys.
I was about to post that in the Pit, then I remembered there was an ATMB thread about the new smileys and I figgerd a Pitting would prolly just get moved here and merged, so then I figgerd I’d just save the mods the trouble and post it here to begin with.
The new sarcasm emoticon doesn’t look sarcastic to me. If anything, it looks whimsical. It could even be wistful.
I have Win 8.1 using Firefox 28 beta and the new ones still don’t render. I fancy you need to clear your browser cache to see the new ones but as I don’t like them at all I shall put off the evil day as long as possible.
I think the Mods and Admins are pointing and laughing at us complaining. Like gods on Olympus.
I would be too. If we ever needed proof that this board has more than its fair share of Sheldons…
I think the new big grin is better.
At least the beady little eyes are closed.
Looks like the old smilies have been restored?
Not for me.
:rolleyes:Hmmm…:dubious: I licked his pie.
Those two appear different on the laptop. Perhaps they are cached.
Therein lies the problem, I believe. They are not as good at expressing the emotions they are intended to express. All the ones that were changed seem to be somewhat “happy” or goofy. That doesn’t work with, say,, which is supposed to indicate anger.
Like it or not, this is a very snarky site. Toning down the snark is not desirable to most people here. That, and not intolerance to change, is why most people are saying they don’t like them.
I personally would also throw in that they just don’t fit with the overall aesthetic theme of the site. Compare them with the icons used in the posting toolbar, for example. This site uses solid, bold, flat shapes in what few images it has. The new smileys seem to be going for a less bold and more three dimensional appearance.
I’m sure the entire site could be redesigned to fit the new smileys, but it seems simpler to just bring the old ones back.
Good luck with that. <- You are correct, Sir.
Is this the petition I sign to bring the old eye-roll smiley back? If not, could someone point me to where that petition is. If they want to keep the new one, they could just rename it the “did I do that?” smiley.
According to earlier posts in the thread, it’s happened before, under the exact same circumstances. Jerry accidentally overwrote the old smiley image files during the upgrade. I think that’s pretty clear.
The only reason I foresee this not being fixed is if Jerry just doesn’t have time or has lost the image files.
Which reminds me: anyone who has the old smileys cached, could you take a screenshot, just in case the files did get lost?
I think the ones we used to have are among those shown in this thread at the vbulletin forums
But getting rid of it would change the tone of the board. The presence of that disabled calendar link lent a subtle nuance to all the posts I made, a nuance that goes beyond explanation. Removing the link would not only bring an end to a grand SDMB tradition of a disabled calandar, but also totally change the meaning of my posts, and no doubt the posts of so many other Dopers.
Wait, we now have two posters named Big T?
Not for me.
