Ominous Quotes

Freud admired that while previous civilizations would have burned him, the Nazis were content with burning his books.

(Got nothin’.)

“Thank you, thank you very much… and now we’d like to play you some songs from Nebraska and THe Ghost of Tom Joad.

A 1943 telegram to a Soviet aircraft manufacturing plant director.

A few good ones from Unforgiven:

“I’ve killed just about anything that walked or crawled at one time or another, and I’m here to kill you, Little Bill, for what you did to Ned.”

“Any man don’t want to get killed better clear on out the back.”

“Deserve’s got nothin’ to do with it.”

And finally: " All right, I’m coming out. Any man I see out there I’m gonna kill him. Any son of a bitch takes a shot at me, I’m not only going to kill him, I’m going to kill his wife and all his friends and burn his damn house down."

They’re even better when Clint Eastwood is sayin’ 'em.

“Sleep with the lights on, white man!”

– Rosario from Will and Grace (speaking to Will)

From Crown of Slaves :

“Who the hell are you?” he whispered.
“Just think of me as the man who will be killing you, and very soon.” The pulser in the hand made a little sweeping motion. “You’d do better to give the surroundings a good look, than to ask pointless questions. This is where your life ends, Diem. At the moment, I’d give it a ninety percent probability. If you don’t control your panic, the estimate goes to one hundred percent. And the time frame drops to seconds, instead of minutes.”
Ringstorff was amazed at the complete indifference in the man’s tone of voice. He’d always thought of himself as “hard-boiled,” but . . . this guy . . .
What demon’s pit did they dredge him up from, anyway?
“First, I require the security codes to the Felicia III. It’s possible my estimate is wrong, and the Felicia is not a slaver in the employ of the Jessyk Combine. In that case, of course, you won’t know the security codes and will be useless. All of you will then die immediately. Beyond that—”
Again, he made that minimal shoulder twitch. “But there’s no point wasting time with what might come ‘beyond that.’ We probably won’t get there anyway.”
He paused, and gave them all that slow, sweeping, empty-eyed examination.
“I have neither the time nor the inclination to use interrogation drugs or torture. Neither is really all that reliable, nor do I see where it’s necessary. All that’s necessary is for me to establish clearly in your minds that I have no respect at all for your lives, and will kill any of you without a moment’s hesitation.”
He raised the pulser, aimed, fired. A hole appeared between Flairty’s eyes and the back of his head exploded. Flairty’s body rocked back and forth for a moment in the heavy chair, and then slumped in the shackles.
“I believe that’s now been established.” The voice still had no tone at all. “But in case it hasn’t—”
The pulser swiveled again, to come to bear on Diem’s head. “Do I need to make another demonstration?”

From Airplane

“That’s just what we want them to think.”

From Real Life

“I would rather be a servant in the house of the Lord than to dwell in the seats of the mighty.” – Former Vice-President Alben W. Barkely, while giving a speech. Immediately after he said these words, he gasped, collapsed at the podium, and died.

“The strong live. The weak die.” - Seta Soujirou’s mantra from Rurouni Kenshin. (taught to him by ShiShiO)

“A sword is a weapon, and kenjutsu the art of killing. That is the truth, no matter what pretty words you use.” - Hiko Seijuurou’s philosophy from Rurouni Kenshin (Kenshin himself quoted it once, but he diminished its ominousness by adding: “But I prefer Kaoru-dono’s naive beliefs.”)

“Shinsengumi wa Shinsengumi. Hitokiri wa hitokiri. Ne…Battousai?” Saitou Hajime, Rurouni Kenshin. (It loses a lot in translation, but basically, what he said was: “Shisengumi is/remains Shinsengumi. A killer is/remains a killer. Right…Manslayer?”)

“USE IT!” Legato Bluesummers from Trigun, Telepathically commanding Vash to fire the Angel Arm

“That is a secret. ^_^” Xelloss, Slayers Next/Slayers Try.

“Omae o korosu.” Heero Yui, Gundam Wing. (Again, not as badass in English: “I’ll kill you.”)

I’ll have to Google this later, but there’s an awesome bit of dialogue where that genious girl (Kanzaki?) from Great Teacher Onizuka speaks in French about shree classmates she’s set up to become part of some sick middle-aged salaryman’s fetish that translates something like, “Repent, poiled little girls.” Brr.

I think it was:

“Should we light up the runway?”

“Oh, no! [deep chuckle] That’s just what they’ll be expecting us to do!”

From Fatherland by Thomas Harris (quote from memory, may not be verbatim):

“Gestapo regulations required that a subject under torture be attended to by a doctor periodically. The regulations were written by civilized men who sat in warm offices.”

Oh frettled gruntbuggly
thy micturations are to me
as plurdled gableblottis in a lurgid bee

Groop, i implore thee
my froonting turlingdromes
and hoopschously drangle me
with crinkly bindlwurges
or else i will rend thee in the gobberwarts with my burglecruncheon

…see if i don’t

now behave or i’ll read the second verse…

MacTech, you heartless slug. Have you no sense of human decency?

Mr. B. Bunny:

It’s not exactly malicious, since the person speaking is a clear-cut “good guy,” but this thread reminds me of this quote. From Terry Pratchett’s The Truth:

That just really wigs me out for some reason…

Can we do songs? 'Cause mine is from Jim White’s “The Wound That Never Heals”

I’m from the government, and I’m here to help.

“Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?”

Beckett did need to go, but the way he went was a little harsh.

Could you explain this?

Oh, sure. I didn’t know if it would make sense out of context or not. The song begins with this woman disposing of the body of her husband. Later in the song, she meets and marries another man, and my quote is from that verse. The next line is, “And by the time they find his body six weeks later, well, she’s a thousand miles away.”

It looks kind of maudlin and exploitive just written out, but the song is creepy and affecting.

Althought there’s no way to prove it, I think that Thomas a’ Beckett’s stand for quasi-independance of the church, and consequent limitation on the powers of the monarchy, was crucial in the development of the relatively limited monarchy of the British. Without him, there might not have been any Parliament.
