I have decided to start a thread about the good things that cops do. The controversial cop thread in the Pit was depressing the hell out of me and since there’s enough badness to go around in our world I wanted to shine a little goodness back into it.
I get the vibe around the Dope that if the reporting isn’t bleeding-edge, exactly “up-to-the-second” that someone will perk up and say something along the lines of, “Seriously? You could only find a good cop story from 2013?!” And then, strangely, your credibility is shot. I don’t give a shit about that. Some of these stories I read are indeed not up to the minute but they brought a tear to my eye anyway.
The first story is about an autistic kindergartner who invited all of his classmates to his birthday party but no one showed up. Once the mother posted on FB how devastated her son was, it soon went viral. And guests did show up:
With a little reading, one would have no trouble listing significant good things that Saddam Hussein or Nicolae Ceausescu or King Leopold did. Even the US government thought Ferdinand Marcos and Joseph Mobutu were pretty admirable. Not so sure about Idi Amin or Pol Pot or Andrew Jackson. Could we expand the parameters beyond Officer Friendly?
If I’m not mistaken, you just compared cops to murderous dictators. That doesn’t seem right to me. I had a feeling that the thread would start off this way.
…you chose to “poison the well” when you decided to quote my post in your OP. You didn’t need to do that. That was kinda rude. In context I was responding to this:
In the pit literally a few posts before you posted I posted a “good news cop story” that happened just down the road from me. And nobody pounced on me. Nobody questioned it. You are misunderstanding the “vibe.”
