¡Ow! Mi cara! ¡Los leopardos!
Did I post in the wrong thread?
Ha! No. it fits in anywhere republicants do damage.
Gavin Newsom throws trans people under the bus.
So much for making California a bastion of defense against trumpism. If he was planning on running as a Democrat for president next time around, not that he had a chance of winning, after this he wouldn’t get past the first primary.
Did you listen to the podcast?
That’s a pretty dishonest framing by the author of this article.
Are you basing this comment on the podcast he did, or on the summary of it posted above?
If anything, I think this podcast and appearances like it would improve his chances.
I read the link, I did not listen to the podcast. I also looked at a couple of stories from a google search, including NBC and CBS. Was the link so misleading as to completely misrepresent what he said?
At the close of the podcast, Charlie Kirk shifted the discussion to transgender healthcare, stating, “I encourage you to learn about the butchery that is happening under chemical castration in this state. The American people are overwhelmingly against it.” Newsom responded, “Yeah. I think we have to be more sensitized to that.”
Kirk continued, “Youth should be off limits, you might be right on deportations, I know I’m right on this,” to which Newsom simply acknowledged, “Yeah.”
Without more “Yeah.” is a little less than the endorsement it’s purporting to be.
I’m not sure I understand your post, @crowmanyclouds. Which “yeah” are you referring to? And he let the statement about butchery of chemical castration in this state slide without clarification? I don’t see anything here to change the opinion I posted above. However, if this is going to turn into a trans debate, include me out.
What context am I missing where saying that trans people shouldn’t be allowed to play sports - a position which every single Democrat in the Senate voted against earlier this week - and teens should be forced to adhere to gender norms is OK?
It’s just me but, I expect more than typical politician non responses if someone is going to accuse him of ‘throwing trans people under the bus’.
My advice to Gavin would be that he should fucking learn something about the subject before he fucking even thinks about opening his fucking pie hole. On all three subjects mentioned there Kirk doesn’t know what the fuck Kirk is talking about.
Personally, as I said above, I think it belongs in the Trump-specific threads, because otherwise this one would be overwhelmed by Trump as well in short order. But I’m not a mod, so my opinion doesn’t really matter in the end.
That is a very dishonest recounting of events (so pretty typical of you to cite such a twisted account).
The quoted exchange came at the end of Gavin and Kirk arguing back and forth over trans people and legislation protecting them, and actions Newsom has taken; Newsom repeatedly stated that he supports trans people because it is the right thing to do, regardless of the electoral unpopularity of doing so. Newsom had already fought Kirk on these points, and was trying to move on.
But you’ve never let facts get in your way, so carry on.
Democrats voted against a blanket ban on all trans people playing all sports all of the time. Nothing Gavin said on this podcast indicates he would support such a ban, either.
Say what? When did he say anything like that? Do you have a time stamp?
Sorta like how you should probably find out what Newsom actually said before you (heh) crow about it?
You’re splitting hairs. The fact that he gave a platform to Charlie Kirk is disqualifying in and of itself. That he conceded any ground whatsoever on the civil rights of his electorate is just adding insult to injury.
The only thing I want to hear a future president say to Charlie Kirk is “pardon denied”.
That’s from Smapti’s cite.
I already quoted it. Kirk said kids shouldn’t be allowed to have gender-affirming care (which includes letting them dress according to their gender identity) and Newsom agreed. He’s lending credibility to the right-wing misrepresentation of gender-affirming care as being kindergarteners snatched out of class during recess and their balls snipped off because the teacher saw them playing with dolls and not, you know, giving them mental support so they don’t kill themselves.
He didn’t actually say,
Charlie Kirk shifted the discussion to transgender healthcare, stating, “I encourage you to learn about the butchery that is happening under chemical castration in this state. The American people are overwhelmingly against it.” Newsom responded, “Yeah. I think we have to be more sensitized to that.”
???
I think this attitude is why the Right has such dominance in the media right now. We dropped the ball when we started cancelling people we didn’t like to avoid platforming them. As it turns out, this doesn’t doom them to obscurity; it allows them to create their own shadow ecosystem, where they fester until they burst forth and get Trump elected. Kirk, and TurningPointUSA, was at the forefront of creating that shadow ecosystem in the sewers we cast them into, and now we are paying the price for allowing them to fester.
Kirk doesn’t need Newsom to platform him; he’s enormously famous and successful regardless. (Newsom pointed this out when Kirk made a joke about the French Laundry - Kirk makes several times what Gavin does). It’s time to stop ceding spaces to fascists because we feel icky about arguing with them, and to start pushing back forcefully rather than running away from confrontation. That’s exactly what Newsom did on this podcast, outside of the cherry picked moments that I’ve seen quoted over and over and over again.
Earlier in that same conversation he established context that showed very clearly that this is not at all what he meant, but why worry about a silly thing like context when we can quote activist blogs instead of primary sources?
I think this bit was edited in after I already posted.
Again, this is pretty ridiculous, as you’d know if you’d listened to the podcast instead of reading what “Erin” thought about it “in the morning”.
Newsom repeatedly challenged Kirk on exactly that point, of what gender affirming care is and what schools do about it. He debunked a specific law Kirk tried to cite, showing that it does not forbid teachers from talking to parents; instead, it protects teachers from being fired if they do not report gender identity or sexual orientation information about kids to parents.
It’s pretty ironic that you are accusing Newsom of amplifying the specific lies he debunked on his podcast.
