Omnibus Evil MFers in the news thread

Given Trump’s recent trend of pardoning white collar criminals this time around (I saw a graphic last night that said he’s issued over 1500 pardons so far this term, counting the J6ers), this guy will be out in a week.

Depends on how much stolen money he has left over to pay Trump.

(Never mind)

(Redacted)

(Confused)

I think @Smapti didn’t realize I was being facetious in my comment about Trump pardoning someone within a week, and commented that Trump can’t pardon state crimes. I think he then did catch the joke, and deleted his comment. So I deleted mine explaining that I was being facetious.

If my interpretation of things is incorrect, @Smapti , kindly let me know.

But he’s serving his sentence in federal prison after being prosecuted by a US Attorney. Aren’t these federal crimes?

I am now genuinely confused, instead of jokingly confused.

I realized that, which is why I deleted my comment.

Carry on.

Group hug!

Wait, this is the Pit. Fuck you guys!

If not this white collar criminal this week, it’ll be another next week.

Coming soon to CNN - GAMBLING!

Soon, CNN will run live odds on world events where its viewers can gamble on them in real time on their smartphones. The “data” (see: betting markets) will, according to Axios, “be featured on CNN’s air through a real-time data ticker and can be referenced across CNN’s platforms when journalists discuss news predictions. The partnership will include prediction market content related to politics, news, culture and weather. The integration will be championed by CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten, who will tap into real-time insights from Kalshi in his reporting on air, both via linear TV and CNN’s new streaming subscription service.”

What are these events that viewers will be able to bet on? Some are seemingly harmless enough: who will win an upcoming election, the weather in Chicago, the federal government’s jobs numbers, or what will be said on Kroger’s next earnings call. But many offerings are on life and death issues that will, as a matter of course, reduce these issues to just another chip on a roulette table for Western audiences increasingly isolated from the violence and suffering their governments inflict on the global south. Take, for example, one recent Kalshi betting market that allowed people to bet on whether Palestinians in Gaza would suffer mass starvation.

I enjoy going to the casino every now and then, but I am fucking sick and tired of greedy vultures turning EVERYTHING into gambling to line their own pockets at the expense of people who are prone to betting more than they should. Sports is gambling. Pokémon cards are gambling. Children’s toys are gambling. Elections are gambling. Now I’m not even gonna be able to watch the news without being invited to lay down cold hard cash on how many more fishermen our government is gonna murder in the Caribbean.

We need to go back to when you could only gamble if you were physically on the premises of a casino, where at least they’re honest about how they take your money. You shouldn’t be able to blow your rent money on a parlay while sitting on the toilet.

You can also bet on when Israel will bomb Gaza

Was that example made up before or after the South Park episode it as a premise?

Will people that are employed by CNN be banned from using the app since, ISTM, it would essentially be insider trading? If you hand a newscaster some breaking news to read, but before they come back from the commercial break, he (or anyone else in the newsroom) places a bet based on that news.

They will totally be able to front run everything they write about. And steer the betting by how they slant (or emphasize) the elements of the story.

Sounds like just the thing our society needs now.

“Greed is good” my ass.

Legally I’m sure the answer is “yes”. Just as people who work for a company that holds a sweepstakes (and family of those employees) are ineligible to participate.

Beauty queen gets life sentence for murdering toddler.

The judge is pretty direct.

And what do you think the twisted reason she had for killing the boy?

And this is probaby what upsets her the most in the aftermath of the murder.

Blocking someone on social media shouldn’t get you killed.

And here’s the reason the killers apparently gave for killing the girl.

It seems that she was vindicated.

Apologies if this has been mentioned, but a quick glance didn’t show me anything.

Former Crawford County Librarian Charged with Kidnapping.

What did her daughter do that was so wrong?

That’s certainly a common enough occurrence, whether the murderer is the male or female of the couple. And is one of the few common reasons for women to murder.

Doesn’t make it less evil. Does make it less novel.

Lions do that shit all the time (though usually it’s the male lions doing it to the females after they kill the prior male and take over the pride).

Normally we expect better of human beings than literal animals, though.
