Omnibus Stupid MFers in the news thread (Part 1)

From the annals of … “She seems nice:”

I’ve long said that cops need serious upfront psychological screening and regular, ongoing psychological screening for as long as they wield power or authority, and particularly if they carry a firearm.

I imagine Ron DeSantis will be recruiting this lovely lady anon.

Valentino said she plans to seek treatment to relieve her stress and claimed she doesn’t regularly use racial slurs.

I don’t regularly torture puppies.
I don’t regularly urinate on apples in the produce section.
I don’t regularly swap babies in the maternity ward when nobody is watching.

A Chick-fil-a in North Carolina advertised that they were looking for volunteers who would be paid in food. They backed down after massive criticism.
Just so happens that Madison Cawthorn used to work there. I assume he got paid in money.

I would think that would be illegal. It would be interesting to see how he puts all these “volunteer meals” on his books.

Just because there are homeless people by the side of the road with “Will Work For Food” scrawled on a bit of cardboard doesn’t mean it’s a good business model.

“volunteers would earn five free entrees per shift (one hour) worked”- I thought a shift was more than an hour? So they’d earn, say, five entrees per hour, and if your shift was three hours you’d go home with 15 entrees?

My guess is that they were paid in coupons or gift certificates they could redeem later.

But yeah, this is very much not legal. I remember many years ago (around 2000) that the online game EverQuest was offering “guide” positions to players. You had to apply and go through a sort of “interview” process, and if picked you basically worked as a volunteer customer service person for set times. You were compensated with a free subscription.

The problem was that by definition, if you are offering compensation to a person for their time, they are considered an employee. You then have to pay them a minimum wage. The $15 a month subscription doesn’t even come close to satisfying that. So they had to either start paying guides a legal wage or pay them nothing. They dropped the free subscription perk.

I imagine this is the same thing. If you’re paying someone anything for their work, then you have to pay minimum wage. Free meals aren’t enough. They’re either volunteers or they aren’t.

I work for a Worker’s Comp Insurance Company. We would call in insurance fraud.

I hope that Chick-fil-a corporate is reviewing its process for selecting franchise owners, because that person clearly doesn’t know how to run a business.

Is that code for “marathon prayer session”?

You (and I) may not like their positions on various social policies, but they are successful as heck (sanitized to match corporate policy) out of the business side.

And (istm) likely redeemable at ANY Chik-Fil-A. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I wonder if JohnT might do us the honor of evaluating their franchising processes for the purposes of this thread.

I was forced to follow that link: there was a little gray circle with “88” next to it, and that just could not stand.

As far as I know, this is the first attested occurence of that statement

Its appeal appears to be the total non sequitirishness of it.

Running away was the worst option. An everyday traffic accident is one thing. A boring thing. A hit and run has legs.

I applaud the cop for keeping his cool. I don’t think I would have been able to.

I think the police officer did give a bit of vent to his feeling when he shut the back and front doors of the police car.

He made sure his feet were in.

And I could almost feel the car shaking all the way over here!
