That doesn’t seem like an accurate report of what happened. Your link says store employees called the cops. And I strongly suspect that we’re not getting the whole story here. If you’re buying food for someone, why would you tell the Popeye’s employee who you’re buying it for anyway?
No, I said Karen called the cops. In this case Store Employee = Karen.
And my point is that a store employee at work is not what anyone would expect from the descriptor “Karen”.
There is only one side of the story, it has an odd element - why would you tell a Popeye’s employee who you are buying food for? - and it involves the protagonist posting a video on TikTok. I don’t think we know what really happened here.
Maybe the student invited the homeless man into the restaurant with him, so he could look at the menu and decide what he wanted. The homeless guy places his order, and the student pays.
It was at a drive-through window. It just seems weird that she would feel the need to explain who she’s buying it for, and why the employee would care - unless there’s more to it preceding what she posted for TikTok views. Maybe the homeless guy was causing trouble there earlier, who knows. If you were running a store, would you want a homeless guy panhandling by coming up to cars waiting in the drive-through line?
And as for why the cops were called - well, why was she still there filming her Tiktok video when they arrived?
“I was terrified, I thought I was gonna get arrested.” Why would she think that?
That implies to me that she was probably refusing to move her car from in front of the drive through window when she was refused service.
Given that the woman was a Dasher (picking up a DoorDash order), it’s not outside the realm of possibility that she wanted to have a store employee bring Jazz’s food out to him, so she could be on her way (a pragmatic challenge for the restaurant). Most (all, AFAIK) places with drive-thrus refuse to serve any walk-up customer, so the guy couldn’t get his food at the window. And they possibly had asked Jazz to stay out of the store at some time previously (or his experience with other stores had led him to make staying out of stores a habit).
That’s plausible.
Given that she TikToked the video, she’s probably just doing it for clout, anyway.
I did that once, many years ago. I used to work in Seattle and would commute by ferry every day. I was heading home and waiting for my ferry to arrive (I had a good hour or so to kill), and a homeless guy was hanging out at the dock. I had a conversation with him (I recall we were talking about tabletop RPGs of all things) and at one point he shamefully asked if I could spare a few bucks because he was hungry. I said, I’ll do better, let’s go inside McDonald’s (we were right outside one) and I’ll buy you dinner. I went in with him, he picked out a meal, I paid for it, and then we sat and chatted as he ate. (I had already had dinner myself.)
We didn’t even talk about his situation or life story or anything. This guy used to play AD&D and we shared an interest, so we just chatted as I would with any other gamer. I got the feeling he was happy that we could just chat about our interests and that’s it.
It’s possible that the staff there knew who he was, but nobody raised a fuss about it. If they did, I’d have been pissed off. He’s a fucking human being after all. No, we just had a good conversation and then I caught my ferry home. It was nothing remarkable and that’s how it should have been.
It, I think, can be detrimental to some homeless people to just give them money. They may not use it for food.
Best IMHO, to buy them a cheeseburger or eggMcmuffin or something and give it to them directly.
Dan: Who do you give your money to now?
Isaac: I give it here and there. There are plenty of good causes.
Dan: That’s the problem.
Isaac: Hmm. Danny, every morning I leave and acre and a half of the most beautiful property in New Canaan. Get on a train and come to work in a 54-story glass hi-rise. In between, I step over bodies to get here. 20, 30, 50 of them a day. So as I’m stepping over them, I reach into my pocket and give them whatever I’ve got.
Dan: You’re not afraid they’re going to spend it on booze?
Isaac: I’m hoping they’re going to spend it on booze. Look, Danny, for these people, most of them, it’s not like they’re one hot meal from turning it around. For most of them, the clock’s pretty much run out. You’ll be home soon enough. What’s wrong with giving them a little Novocain to get them through the night?

Not sure if this has been shared or where to post it, but clearly stupidity was involved: Someone sold a voting machine on eBay.
