On the subject of foreign IDs being used in the U.S., I present two data points.
Years ago, I was at a convenience store in Springfield, IL, and in front of me were two German men trying to buy liquor. The clerk absolutely would not accept that their German passports were valid forms of ID. The situation ended with the guys not getting their beer, which I have to assume would be quite upsetting to Germans. In the clerk’s defense, she was probably never trained about foreign passports being used as ID.
The other point is that I’ve seen more than one video on YouTube of an American cop pulling over a foreign driver and steadfastly refusing to believe that they could drive on a foreign driver’s license. One California cop insisted that the Canadian tourist needed a California driver’s license! The Canadian politely asked the cop if he (the tourist) was expected to take the California driver’s license course and pay for a CA license, without having an address in CA, in order to be able to drive around for his week-long holiday. And the cop was like “Yes! Now step out of the car.” There was a yuge lawsuit,.
Thinning the herd. Too bad.
In contrast, back in 2012 I was visiting back home and went to do early voting at the county office. I was required to produce a photo ID, so I asked if I could use my Swedish Residence Permit. They looked at it and accepted it (“as long as it is issued by a government it is ok!”). I did have my Utah driver’s license as a backup, but being allowed to vote with a foreign ID kind of blew my mind!

As a victim of catalytic converter thieves, with the result of my car being declared a total loss (only damage was the stolen converter), I have absolutely zero sympathy for corpse-guy.
That reminds me of one from a few years ago. A cop finds an empty car parked on the side of a busy road in the middle of the night. The owner shows up and explains that he ran out of gas was just running across the street to the gas station to fill up a jerry can and told the cop he’d be right back (he may have even tried to borrow some money from the cop). In any case, while waiting for him to return, the cop noticed six catalytic converters in the back seat AND it was a stolen car. He was arrested.
I have to assume the cop asked for the guy’s ID, otherwise, there wasn’t really a whole lot of upside to returning to the car. If he said he was going to the gas station and just kept going, he’d have a healthy head start before the cop realized he was gone.

I have now learned about something even more horrifying than Tarantula Wasps. Thankfully I am getting old enough that some things seen can be forgotten if I don’t keep thinking about them.
