Clearly, the only answer is to be sure little girls are properly armed before they go look for their lost pets.
Why the hell do these people even HAVE doorbells? Go live in a compound in the country surrounded by barbed wire if you’re so afraid of the world that a child ringing the bell sets you off.
That would deny them the confrontation they’re seeking.

Yep. Instead of ringing the doorbell, the little girl should have just assumed that the homeowner had stolen her kitten, and gone in guns blazing, shooting every person in the house. Perfectly justified.
If you don’t want to get shot in your home, then don’t be the kind of person who probably would steal a kitten.
