Omnibus Stupid MFers in the news thread (Part 1)

And West Virginia University is canceling its graduate mathematics programs. Good job! What are we up to now? Three, isn’t it? Kentucky, Florida, and West Virginia doing their utmost to ensure college diplomas from those states are of zero value.

Math is woke?
After reading the story: Professor Euler? They don’t know what they had.

All knowledge and education is woke. Ignorance is bliss.

:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: From the link:

I mean, it’s nice that whoever proposed the aliases is retaining their sense of humor, but this whole situation is definitely not funny.

This is one reason I’ve always felt it’s important for us STEM faculty to be good allies in pushing back against shortsighted corporate-management-style administrative cuts to humanities programs on the grounds that nobody needs anything but STEM these days. “First they came for the Classics professors, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Classics professor. Then they came for the Philosophy professors, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Philosophy professor…” And so on.

Make no mistake, shortsighted corporate-management-style administrators are not actually motivated by a coherent vision of more exclusive STEM focus in academia (even if that were such a good idea in its own right, which I don’t think it is). They’ll come for anybody they think looks vulnerable.

Leave the Mutter Museum alone! It is not “woke.” It’s very cool and I need to visit again ASAP.

No, ignorance is strength. And war is peace, and freedom is slavery.

Somebody has been reading 1984.

My guess is that the original article, as written, had

An asshole made comments about flag at Laura Ann Carlton’s store in Cedar Glen and killed her before being shot and killed by police

but an editor redlined asshole, and

A business owner in California was shot and killed after a dispute over a Pride flag displayed outside her store, authorities said.

and an editor sent it back, wanting to know what kind of pride flag, since a lot of people are proud of Old Glory.

OK. Maybe not, but I like to think there are people involved.

This belongs in the Evil thread first, and maybe here second.

Sheesh. I skimmed the article and didn’t spot Fourier.

I can’t read the article. What’s wrong with the Mutter Museum?
I went some years ago, won’t likely make it back again…

I’m sorry, I should have considered that. They’re rethinking about what they want to display and one of their consultants accused them of being elitist. There was a whole discussion of “cancel culture” aimed at the museum. I’ll try and find another article about it.

What are those…numbers doing there? Is that maths?

Ever since Newt Gingrich and the Contract With On America* I’ve considered it less a work of fiction than a reference for understanding the GOP.

I think the only thing that would surprise Orwell is that it didn’t take WWIII to get us here. Yet.

* Actually as far back as Nixon, if not before. But Newt really crystallized the movement for me.

They have an example of megacolon from a man who died with 40 lbs of poop inside.
Trump hates competition.

They got Elvis in there? Big score!

Arabic numbers!

And now we have Ramaswamy touting a brand-new version of 9/11 “truther”:

  • Vivek Ramaswamy wants to know how many ‘federal agents’ were on the planes that hit the Twin Towers: ‘I want the truth about 9/11’**

  • Vivek Ramaswamy is again raising questions about what happened on September 11, 2001.

  • The GOP contender says it’s “legitimate” to ask “how many federal agents” were on the planes.

Evidently JAQing off is now passes for political discourse.

If it’s good enough for RFK Jr…

They haven’t banned that book yet?
