I have always contended that Brave New World is far more relevant to the dangers that America faces. The manipulation and control in 1984 is overt and threatening. We have a history and culture that makes that sort of control difficult. In Brave New World however, “everybody is happy” and unable to even recognize the nightmare they live in. The dissenters aren’t even punished, really, they’re just sent to live with all the other interesting people.
They make a great pair though, and should both be required reading for every high school student.
The passenger lists of the 9/11 planes are public and as far as I can tell, there were no federal agents aboard.
But if there were and they are keeping it secret, what’s the theory? Did the government trick a bunch of agents they didn’t like into getting on the planes so they could kill them? Or did they volunteer for a suicide mission? Were they put on board to goad the hijackers……”Allah sucks, you pig fucker…whatcha gonna do, take down this plane? I triple hog dare you!
I remember when the JAQ crowd asked, after 9/11, why there were no prominent Republicans/conservatives on the planes…….they must’ve known. Then when you point out that there WAS a prominent Republican on the plane….Barbara Olsen, who was a conservative commentator married to Bush’s solicitor general…they switch to “I wonder what she did that made them want to kill her”.
This is like that, but way stupider. Are the candidates actually courting the conspiracy theory voting block these days?

I haven’t read this book, but I once became engaged in a Facebook argument with a former high school crush who turned into a colossal patriarchal religious “pastor” asshole, and he cited this book tirelessly in his crusade against trans people, abortion, and women forgoing child care to work outside of the home.
I’ve also seen conservatives reference 1984 copiously in their delusions about liberals taking away their right to oppress others and their right to be racist, sexist and bigoted without having someone pointing out that makes them an asshole.
I guess I’m not surprised that liberals do the same thing, but I think those books were meant to be allegories, not prophesy. In your case - who exactly in America is happy right now? Who is unable to recognize the nightmare they live in? It ain’t me.
The Magas don’t realize what a dumpster fire their leader is advocating. They are “happy” with him. It doesn’t matter that he dragged the country through the mud and Biden inc. are trying to drag it out. The only reason they aren’t happy with the nightmare is that they think Biden and the “Demoncrats” created the nightmare.
I think if trump gets power again and does all the things he wants (shudder) they’d be blissfully happy no matter what sort of hellscape he creates.
No demagogue can afford to let his followers be “blissfully happy.”
They must be kept in a constant state of anger and fear of some enemy who can be blamed for everything that is keeping them from being blissfully happy. And who must be eliminated from society.
When the demagogue runs out of domestic enemies (trans people, gays, Jews, etc.), he must transfer the hatred to some external foe and start a war.

Yes, paranoia is a very common symptom of some kinds of mental illness, and could definitely be an incentive to cause someone to fake their own death, if they think it might help keep “them” from coming after her.
Texas School Board Censures Right-Wing Member Caught in Library
A far-right member of the school board in a Texas town, who has been on a crusade to ban books, was censured on Wednesday night for allegedly lying to gain access to a high school library.
The 5-2 vote to reprimand Karen Lowery came after dozens of residents of Granbury—evenly divided between those who were appalled by her actions and those who defended her—spoke during a five-hour meeting about what’s being called Librarygate.
And of course the library vigilante is named Karen. I pity the thousands of women out there named Karen. There is nothing quite like being a living breathing stereotype.
