What does he mean by, “I really didn’t expect for it to go so left”?
He didn’t believe he’d get caught.
I think it derives from “out of left field”. To him this outcome was completely unexpected.
Confused that with “things going south”?
And here I was thinking that “getting punished for random assault” was now considered a woke socialist thing.
There is an old expression of something “taking a left turn”, which means to dramatically change (usually for the worst).

Note that “left” is traditionally considered “bad”. Going back to Roman times, the term “sinister” means both “left” and “evil” or at least “bad luck”.
“Left turn” or “left field” I’m familiar with but not the way this kid phrased it.
Hey, going by his amazing life choices, I’d have to say he’s not really a model of proper use of, well, damn near anything.
OH FUCK THE FUCK OFF STAFF OF THE ECONOMIST
Haven’t clicked that, but… They do at least think it would be bad, right?
Obviously it would be terrible, because the stock market would go down. Defense stocks could be a bright spot.
The gist seems to be “Invest in whoever you think is gonna win the war and sell your assets in their enemies”, which is an awfully optimistic outlook at a war that would probably end with things like “stocks” and “bonds” and “sovereign wealth funds” and “currency” no longer existing as stores of value.
Put everything into canned tuna and Geiger counters, maybe?
The archetype for a news report!
“The best biter prevailed” is brilliant - a direct quote from the sherrif’s office.
“The better biter prevailed.”
Is the better biter bitter towards the lesser better biter?
Let’s see if I have his business model right:
Step 1 - Assault random people in a park.
Step 2 - Film yourself doing Step 1.
Step 3 - Post Step 2 on Tik Tok.
Step 4 - Be surprised when the cops show up due to Step 3.
Step 5 - ???
Step 6 - Profit!!
It reminds me of the idiot kids a couple years ago who were filming themselves tearing up school restrooms, then being surprised they were getting suspended from school.

I think when you reach a certain degree of popularity or wealth, it rots your brain. You start to think you cannot fail at anything, even if what you’re doing is illegal. I can think of countless examples, from Trump to Sam Bankman-Fried.
The better biter bit a bit of bitter butter.

He seems to have thought that hitting random people was perfectly OK if he just shook their hands afterward.
Why he would have thought that is utterly unclear to me. Maybe it works with his friends group, all of whom he expects would find this whole thing funny, and he’s unable to understand that there might be a difference between slapping a close friend on the shoulder and hitting a total stranger in the head?
