No matter how erotic something like asphyxiation could be, I think I’d choose “plain vanilla pleasures” over “high chance of death”.
The “trick”, from what I hear every time one of these cases comes up, is to set it up in such a way that, should you pass out, the cord/rope/belt will release. So, a cord wrapped around your neck that you have to actively be holding tension on, not a cord that’s anchored to something overhead that’ll cinch if you pass out.
Aside from the risk of death from autoerotic asphyxiation, there’s the risk of being found dead by a loved one in that position. So if you worry at all about postmortem embarrassment, you might want to avoid it.

And then how do you later recruit their replacement and go on enjoying your kink, whatever it is? Kinks tend to be really hard-wired, so cultivating a new one with less … baggage … would be difficult.
