I would guess now, since he is the former champion in that organization, most people will think of the new official champion with a little asterisk beside their name. Maybe that is what Carlsen was after.

There’s a decent chance it was deliberate provocation on his part.
He’s been pushing FIDE to basically modernize and appeal more to the current generation by doing things like changing up tournament formats and, apparently, dress codes. He’s popular enough that it actually stands a pretty good chance at working, too. It makes more of an impact when the consensus best player in the world does something like this.
I’m not inclined to take FIDE’s side these days considering their boneheaded stance on trans players. There’s not even a reason for chess, of all things, to be gender-segregated in the first place.
