Portland city councilor says that a ban on using AI price-fixing to set rental prices is just like what the Nazis did.
What a hill to die on.
I can’t wait for the regulators to decide it’s not price-fixing because an AI is doing it.
Worked for the gig economy. (“It’s not a labor rights violation because we’re using an app.”)
Just a WAG here, but I suspect Mr. Ryan doesn’t know that “National Socialist” means “Nazi” and thinks it just means “Socialists across the nation”. Because the argument seems to be more relevant to something that might be argued to be related to socialism.
If anything, it’s even more stupid than just comparing it to Nazi ideology.
ETA: Looking at his biography, I dunno… Maybe he is comparing it to Nazis. One of his big initiatives was setting up huge homeless encampment “safe zones”, so if anything he’d probably look favorably on socialism.

This interpretation is given a slight assist because he used all lowercase letters, “national socialist.”
Using socialism as a bad word in one of the most left-wing cities in the country is certainly a choice. (The current mayor rose to prominence by building free housing for the homeless during covid when he was still a private citizen). And if he legitimately doesn’t know what “national socialist” means I’d consider that disqualifying for public office.
Every liberal city has the outliers (Dan White anyone?) who fight and argue against liberal progress.
And it’s a funny thing, to me, that the phrase “national socialism (playbook)” sounds noticeably different from “national socialist” as a descriptor of anything.
I’m not insisting he didn’t mean it the way you are interpreting it. I’m saying that it’s not unreasonable to suppose that maybe he didn’t, and that he didn’t recognize that the words he happened to string together (again, maybe) are of historical significance.
At the very least, it makes him a stupid MFer.
She’s from Texas (and her mother’s family has been there a long time) and was a hard-core Reagan supporter early in her high school years. My assumption is that she is at least baptized, and may have been ‘born-again’ at some point.
Yes, and so? I’m not clear what you are implying by this assumption.
Personally, I have no patience with people who, because they are heavily devoted to their own religion, think that everyone else should follow suit. But I’m not sure if that’s what you were getting at.
My assumption is that Cleveland assumes all Palestinians are Muslim, and in Ms Abughazaleh’s case, regardless of her father’s religion, I’d wager small sums that she was raised a Christian.
I misunderstood whom you meant by “she” in your earlier post. But whatever religion Abughazaleh is, it makes no difference to the import of what Cleveland said, which amounts to “she needs to be the same religion I am (for whatever reason).”
Local PD is using AI to answer the phones for non-emergency calls. How fucking stupid. This feels like it’s gonna get someone killed. I understand it’s only for non-emergency calls, but how many people call the non-emergency number with, what turns out to be, an actual emergency. I also get that it’s meant to transfer you to a real person if it hears ‘trigger’ words like fire or smoke, it’s a good thing AI doesn’t make mistakes.
I see it’s been deployed in some other places around the country, I suppose I should take a breath and ask if anyone else lives in a city with something like this and whether or not it’s caused any actual problems.
Just remember that real intelligence is not the only other option.
We are fucking doomed.

Eta: I see the clip already posted is that scene
A Christmas mural in Kingston upon Thames is to be removed after it was discovered to have clearly been generated by AI.
I mean, that’s not even very good bad AI art. That’s about what you would have gotten out of the image generators two years ago. How did that even get created?
