Oof! I’m missing what the source of the savage hostility was…? What caused all the attacks, some of them mob attacks? To be clear, not suggesting any cause was valid justification for beatings and such…but, God almighty, somebody pissed in somebody’s cornflakes.

I wondered the exact same thing (except that I figured it was someone’s Cheerios that got peed in).
The “someone” being the person who factually shot their son and killed him.
So every media source out there describing the incident is essentially referring to the defense attorney’s statement? There isn’t a police report or anything? That’s pretty suspect, IMHO.
This is a wholly bizarre situation. On what seems to be a random Tuesday, a mob of individuals gathered in a dormitory lobby specifically for the purpose of attacking one student, this happened to be on the same day and time that the family arrived to remove his property. Were these people just planning on sitting there all day just in case the family and their target decided to show up?
There is very little in the media that is of any help. The Louisville Courier Journal has a story that looks like it might be worth reading, but it’s behind a pay wall. Here is a very small amount of additional information from TV station WRTV: (emphasis added)
In a press conference on Wednesday, police were asked about a video circulating on social media that shows a fight before the shooting. WRTV does not have permission to share that video, but investigators say they do have it, and it is part of the investigation. The family has seen it as well.
“If you were going to be the adult, to show up, what you should have done was let them fight it out or try to stop the fight. You brought a gun to a kid fight,” said Terrance.
I’ve also seen a Facebook posting from Channel 2 Now News (Frankfort?). Some of the comments claim that this was gang-related and/or that bullying was involved. No idea how much of that might be true.
You can see a video here; I don’t know if this is the video referenced above. It appears to be from a dorm room overlooking the place where the shooting happened (you might as well mute the sound, it contains nothing helpful).

Investigation of the cause is in the early stage but what I read:
Witnesses described a scene of absolute chaos. Two survivors told French broadcaster BFMTV that the fire appeared to start when a staff member, carried on another’s shoulders, held a lit sparkler or candle in a champagne bottle too close to the low, wooden ceiling.
“In a few dozen seconds, the whole ceiling was on fire,” one witness said. “Everything was made of wood.”
As the flames spread, a flashover—a phenomenon where combustible gases ignite simultaneously—triggered at least one explosion. The rapid escalation led to a desperate scramble for the exits.
The Basement Trap: Many victims were reportedly in the basement nightclub and faced a narrow staircase and a single exit as the ceiling above them began to collapse.
Latest estimate is 40 dead and 100 injured, but with lung injuries from inhaling toxic gases I think it likely more will die over the next several weeks.
The fascinating thing about that original post is, that it implies that such a plot was actually taken to a vote and placed on the official record.
