Omnibus Stupid MFers in the news thread (Part 2)

As for that, some tellings of the story do suggest that he left against medical advice.

Meanwhile, it was decided that he should spend the night in a nearby hospital under observation. He remained overnight, then exited the hospital through a window in his hospital gown the next morning and hailed a cab back to the racetrack

Whoever it is, they’ll soon be sacked.

Just reinforcement.

And I also appreciate the education.

Other than the thread literally being started by Spiderman.

Indeed. It’s the term which is used in senior living facilities, particularly those dealing with residents who may have cognitive issues, for when someone goes on walkabout.

Yeah, I learned that from a friend who’s an elementary school teacher. She has to write up kids when they elope from their classroom.

That was at Bay Meadows. To amplify, they wouldn’t let him ride any more that day but he rode several more races the next day, the last day of the meet. Bing Crosby was offering a gold watch and $500 to the leading jockey for the meet and he was the leader going into that day. He didn’t win any more races but came in high enough to maintain his lead. He raced for nineteen more years before retiring,

He must have really wanted that watch.

Nonsense. Horses’ hoofbeats don’t echo. Nobody knows why.

As to the more expanded use of “elope”, I learned about it here in the context of a Doper with an autistic child who likes to run away from overstimulating environments at daycare or school. Or just run away from their backyard for the hell of it, like the senile folks mentioned by @kenobi_65.

Of course the classic “eloping” as in running away to get married has the same origin. The woman’s parents are in effect holdin her prisoner / hostage, unwilling to let her marry That Guy. And then the man frees her to clandestinely run away so they can get married, or at least shack up.

With part of the moral of the story being that she shouldn’t do that if she knew what’s good for her. Just like the little kids and the seniors.

I’ve written up kids for that, too, but I never knew that word for it.

Employee tells customers if they don’t think America is the best country in the world they can leave, business fires him, he sets up GoFundMe for his unjust termination.

I checked the GoFundMe, and it’s over halfway to its target. And it was only created 2 days ago. I’m a little surprised that he hasn’t exceeded it already, given that Fox News is advertising a link to its racist followers.

At the moment it only has one comment, and it’s just what you’d expect:

I’m sorry CARTA fired you for expressing patriotism and greetings to passengers on our 250th Independence Day Anniversary.

I hope you will go after the man who accused you of being a Xenophob and Racist for damages associated with your job loss in civil court. :folded_hands:t2: for you to secure new employment with a real American company who doesn’t hate patriots.

Glossing over the fact that he acted in direct contradiction to his job duties, claiming he is being persecuted for patriotism, religious virtue signaling, calls to sue people, it has almost everything you’d expect in it.

It’s also used to describe autistic kids running away, which is a common problem and the cause of many drownings. Many kids unlock doors and take off without their parents’ awareness.

If you hear about a kid drowning, the odds are better than not that he’s autistic.

My kid eloped once the first week of school and had to be chased around the building. Fortunately it’s not a recurring issue with him. But it’s one big reason we are teaching him how to swim. Even though it’s taking years.

Damn, I wish I knew that word back in my drinking days so I could add one more story to my routine.

Yeah, I eloped when I was in elementary school once . . .
