Omnibus Stupid MFers in the news thread (Part 2)

Isn’t the actual lyric “Gentlemen, Start your engines!” :winking_face_with_tongue:

Which further reinforces the idea of the anthem as an entertainment act by the performer(s), rather than a united community expression of sentiment. I completely agree with you that that’s pretty much the norm for US anthem etiquette nowadays, which has changed from its previous form.

But that shift in perception and expectation—from shared community song to something functionally indistinguishable from a performer’s entertainment act—is the main reason the change was widely resisted when it began.

[ETA: I slightly changed the wording of that last sentence, apparently after @Atamasama started replying to the original version. @Atamasama did not misquote me.]

I understand that and you’re right; it is part of the performance now, not much different from the halftime show (except in scope).

So now we’re expected to stand for an entertainment act? Should I also stand for a juggling act?

Time to bring back taking a knee, I say.

A lot of teams have a similar tradition. I once sang an anthem at a St. Louis Blues game with the symphony chorus, and they explained the tradition to us, which they said they are always careful to do ever since a young woman burst into tears at the end of her performance because she thought the whole arena was booing her.

There’s a movement now among Christian men to have male-only gyms.

Men will now be able to share communal showers thinking only of Bible verses and not those hot weightlifting babes.

It’s been a few years since I last used a commercial gym. Are young women now working out naked? If so, sign me up! But I bet not.

Seems Mr. Parsons has a very active imagination or a very crabbed definition of “naked”. Then again, he defines his entire life by the counterfactual shit he believes, so this is just one more brick in that Great Wall 'o Stupid.

The Bible is really pretty clear on this kind of thing - it’s his problem, not the gym’s or the womens’

Wait, you mean the Bible actually says things? It’s not just a prop to be waved around and kissed?

A heretical idea, I know. That’s why the Pope got ragged on for quoting Isaiah 1:15.

Why am I hearing somebody using a Bugs Bunny accent to shout “Da noive ov dat guy!”

Such people might appreciate the sex segregation of conservative Muslim-majority countries or the modest dress required of women in such countries.

And, yet, they are the ones ranting about Sharia Law.

The differences between religious extremists are much more ones of substance than style.

What is is about later versions of Abrahamic faiths where misogynist sex hang-ups are the main defining feature of their faith practice, and maybe even their faith?

Ironic, ain’t it?

Washington Post had an article yesterday about people who are proselytizing on planes in the middle of flights

To small crowds on airplanes… self-described evangelists are seizing the opportunity to share their faith with other passengers, whether or not fellow travelers asked for the word or not. “They have no choice to hear the truth,” said Whitney Lynn… “When I have a gift and I have a life raft, if you’re drowning, I want to give you that life raft so you can be saved.”

Of course, they’re also recording themselves doing so so they can post reactions on social media. My reaction: Hell, no!

Oh, absolutely. To be fair, gym attire for women can be revealing and/or skintight, and I’m sure that that gentleman prefers that women dress like Holly Hobbie, so as not to generate sinful thoughts in men’s minds.

That link is paywalled.

What I’m guessing they either don’t understand or do understand and plan to use it to their ‘advantage’ (because persecution) is that if, and when, the cabin crew tells them to knock it off, it’s a federal crime for them to continue and they can expect to be met by police at the gate.
If you become disruptive to the point that the pilot decides to divert to get you off the plane (not that I would expect it to come to that), you’ll can be billed for that. I’ve read some cases where, for most people, it’s a devastating amount of money, like 10s or 100s of thousands of dollars.

But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
