Excuse me, but people who sneak into underground labyrinths looking for gold aren’t called “invaders”, they’re called “adventurers”!
Spelunkers…
Watch out for the otyughs, though.
And bring a 10-foot pole.
Problem is, they only bring meat shields (i.e., self-proclaimed tanks); nary a cleric, rogue, mage or bard among them. No wonder the watch always arrests them.
A few weeks ago a guy in my area hopped out of a manhole and attacked someone. Then said something about kids being sex trafficked in the tunnels.
I’d usually say the wackos are crawling out of the woodwork. But now, just like the apocryphal toilet pythons, they’re climbing out of the plumbing.
Truly we live in accursed times.
Mudlarks.
From the article:
Steve Duncan, a former urban explorer who has spent a lot of time in New York’s sewers and subway tunnels, told the New York Times that in more than 100 sewer trips, the most valuable thing he found was an expired credit card.
There is something about gold that drives people nuts, even kids. The natural history museum where I volunteer has a courtyard that includes a plateaued fountain with horizontal runs at various heights. We put sand in the runs, salt them with iron pyrite and bill it as gold panning, supplying pans and little baggies for the purpose.
The kids before the fourth grade or so go absolutely nuts, showing off a couple grams of pyrite excited about how rich they are. I try not to lie, calling it “panning” rather than “gold panning,” If they specifically ask if it’s pyrite I’ll tell them but if they ask if it’s real gold I direct them to a case in the geology exhibit that has native gold, silver, copper, and pyrite.
From DesertDog’s quoted article…

It could be that he’s protecting his supply..
Cheesesteaks should always be used for good, not evil.
LOUNE made a joke yesterday because he found that his cinnamon was non-irradiated and was worried he’d been eating radiation in his cinammon all this time.
I said, “Radiation kills cancer. It’s fine.”
Clearly this guy was thinking along the same lines.
Also I have to say it’s getting harder for me to tell the difference these days between conspiracy/health nut claims and actual psychosis.
“issues with her medication”
I’m sorry - having raised three young men through their High School careers, I find this hilarious.
And he was Professor Moriarty in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes’ Smarter Brother.
I’m with you, but holy shit - it’s good thing she was just there to insult them and not throw a grenade at them or something.
Yes it’s funny but this part:
However, after that teacher left she allegedly proceeded to organise students by race and gender, insult them using racial slurs and derogatory statements…
Maybe not so much.
Ooh - wow. That’s what I get for not reading the article.
My husband’s comment:.
That next PTO meeting is going to be brutal.
That fake teacher was also using her pretend authority to body shame teenagers, and that is definitely not something that teenagers need more of, let alone from someone who is (supposedly) in such a position.
