Omnibus Stupid MFers in the news thread (Part 2)

I replayed the NPR story about the recovery of Renoir. It turned out the first clue was a thief’s DNA on one of the paintings; when analyzed, the govt linked it to his license plate. I’d smack myself in the head with my cut-up hand!

Note:

For nearly three decades, the case remained unsolved: No murder weapon was ever recovered, law enforcement officials struggled with tight-lipped witnesses abiding by the gangs’ “code of the streets,” and as year after year passed, any physical evidence that might have existed slowly faded away.

But as those years went by, a new form of evidence emerged around which prosecutors would eventually build their case: Davis’ own words. He spoke openly in interviews, documentaries and podcasts about his involvement in Shakur’s death and released a 2019 memoir recounting his version of events.

Almost as smart as the late unlamented O.J. Simpson. Almost.

Feeling overwhelmed in public? Someone annoying you?

Bite them!

Don’t most people get cured of biting by the time they’re 3 years old?

Palantir CTO says the techbros are all taking up smoking because they expect LLMs to cure cancer.

Tell me when they start jumping out of their office windows claiming AI will catch them.

Meanwhile, Anthropic is putting out warnings that their AI might go rogue and start causing problems by injecting itself into unprotected IOT devices and cheap cell phones with no security features.

“Jeeze, Superman. You’re a real asshole when you’re drunk.”

Saw an ad yesterday for what was presumably an AI that you use to shut down your other AI’s unauthorized activities, don’t remember the company (started with an O). I guess it’s AI all the way down.

Seems suspiciously like the guy who called me up years ago saying he was from a security company and wanted to sell me some software to protect against scammers. I told him “I can’t talk right now, give me your number (this was before caller ID was common); I’ll call you back.” He laughed and hung up.

(No, I wasn’t going to call him back; I was going to try reporting the number. Yes, I know that these days they fake them.)

I used to love telling that joke.

A pro-smoking vibe is also visible on social media among “influencers” and various deluded sorts, who believe in doing things that experts warn against (the “I will not comply” crowd), and besides, nicotine is the new cure-all, along with chlorine dioxide bleach and borax.

To be fair, if you ingest enough of those, you don’t have to worry much about general health or disease or much of anything anymore

Poorly-written headline. That’s not on the two-year-old; that’s on whatever idiot left a gun where toddlers could get to it.

I don’t see any blame or judgement in the article title; they’re leading with the most alarming part of the story. Rather, if the title was “daycare administrator brings unsecured firearm” they’d probably be rightfully accused of burying the lead.

Being the nitpicky Dope and all, shouldn’t that be “lede”?

Uh oh. Now you’ve done it.

Nope. “Lede” is a now-accepted neologism but isn’t the only appropriate spelling of the term.

Merriam-Webster “lead”

edit the lead to grab the reader’s attention

The spelling “lead” is historically preferred, and “lede” is a neologism that I dislike.

For more info:

But it’s absolutely not the case that “lede” is correct any more than “drive thru” is the correct way to describe the fast food driving order/pickup area. Though note I’m also not saying that “lede” is wrong.

(It’s much like axe/ax or grey/gray.)

Burying the lead? I’m sure they’d remove the bullet before the funeral.
