Really? What naita posted was my first thought as well. Why post about someone like that in this thread if you aren’t supposing some level of troll activity? It seems a legitimate question and no cause to throw insults.
Maybe the answer is obvious to you, and so maybe I am just obtuse, but please share your reasoning.
I’m going to flag this post by Rastafarian. He mentions the 9/11 hijackers. He’s ticked a few other boxes for me as a trock of the poster who rhymes with phlegm. 9/11 just adds another.
Totally reasonable inference, but we don’t really use the classic definition of troll in a lot of cases. I keep saying we need to change the thread title. This thread is best conceptualized as a series of miniature pittings.
Yep, the last time I mentioned him by name as a suspect for a trollish poster, he started a thread at that other board pretending to be a 3rd party standing up for FJ. (It didn’t go well for him.)
He’s a sock. Socks sock to troll, therefore he’s trolling. Trolling socks are trocks. The math works perfectly.
Normally I don’t show my work, but apparently a some haven’t had the trock detection classes yet…
He comes to a new board, a board with the smartest people on earth on it, and his first post is one of the stupidest fucking questions ever asked in GQ.
His name smells of an experienced, organized, game on sock. Especially when seen in view of his question.
He found the right forum, and figured out how to post a picture in it, the first time. He should have posted it in ATMB to look like a noob. He’ll learn though.
Anyone smart enough to do #3 is smart enough to know what a fucking doorbell is. Doorbells are everywhere, and have been for 75 years, yet he’s never seen one. LOL, good harmless effective troll.
Mods can’t do anything because they need proof. Their hands are tied, but they’ve been here long enough to know this is one to watch.
I think my record is still at 100%.
Like OJ, I knew he did it all along.
Guaranfuckingteed SOCK trolling the smartest people in the world with the dumbest question in the world.
But you’re contending that he’s shown up already without his name being used. This makes no sense. I don’t see what the point of being mysterious about it is.
The more information you can post here the easier it makes it for me. I don’t have time to investigate every suspicion, but good leads make it quicker to confirm them.
I wasn’t sure if we could explicitly say this, but Colibri did, so yes, this thread is actually very useful for keeping an eye on possible socks, and being vague about who you think it is, or why, makes it more difficult to seriously investigate the claims. I’m not one of the sock-hunters but the value of specificity is evident. I think one of the most eye-opening things I’ve learned as a mod is just how many people are seriously passionate about trolling this board. Some of them do it like they’re drawing a paycheck for their trouble. It makes me feel slightly better about how I choose to waste my own time.
It is my personal policy not to comment on whether I think someone is a sock or troll. I’m not going to make that claim without hard evidence. That doesn’t mean I don’t think it can sometimes be a very reasonable inference for other posters to make.
Even though I don’t hunt socks, this thread is useful to me, personally, for finding threads that have the potential to spin out of control, regardless of the intent of the posters involved. If one person is pissed off enough to post about it here, probably other people are pissed off too, which might lead to rule violations in those threads.
There you have it, in case any haters come around. Your snark has been imbued with purpose!
Some apparently don’t feel as emotionally involved or spend as much passion and energy on this practice as others. I guess the next claim is that those people shouldn’t be participating in this thread…
I’m generally not going to confirm or deny suspicions until I have a basis to take action. Sometimes that takes research, sometimes discussion in the mod loop. Not all the accusations here are correct, but I generally do investigate when the accusation seems plausible and I have the time to go sock hunting. (Of course, we don’t ban merely because of accusations of trolling. It can be difficult to tell trolling from simple looniness or stupidity, and we tend to give the benefit of the doubt at least for a while.)
I only get direct reports from GQ, and other mods only for their own forums, so a pattern of behavior that extends across several forums can be missed. This thread is especially useful for detecting that.
If for whatever reason you don’t want to make an accusation public, you can always PM me or another mod.
As I’ve said before, this thread is very helpful to me personally in detecting socks. If you’re not interested helping out, there’s no need to threadshit.
It’s a 2 part policy on my part. Part 1 is specific to femme. As far as I can tell, he does read what we’re doing, and he has popped in at least once. I’d rather not give him the satisfaction.
Part 2 - I don’t know what to do about part 2. If we name someone, and he’s found to be a troll, sock, trock, whatever, and cornfielded, then, sometimes at least, multiple posts are also cornfielded. The less said the better, IOW. Should we just share all and then let you all deal with the fall out?
Regarding Rasta, I posted a list up thread of similarities to FJ. Darren has posted some as well. I’ll try to find mine and re-post it, in case it’s helpful.
But the full name doesn’t. I had no idea who you were talking about.
Like I said, this doesn’t make sense. You already identified a poster as his sock. I fail to see how using his original name makes a difference.
Of course. The sooner we find a sock the less collateral damage there is likely to be.
Nobody identified who they were actually talking about, which is my point. They pointed out similarities to an unnamed poster (or mentioned a rhyme that wasn’t actually a rhyme). I would have banned him a couple of weeks ago if someone had (as I now have). It’s better not to make me guess who you are talking about.
