I don’t think there’s a rule that gentle satire must be in the Pit.
But I think a Pit rule makes sense if it’s the kind of satire that would be deeply offensive if it were not satire. Because even if it’s written by Jonathan Swift, there will always be a few dumbasses who don’t understand that it’s satire.
And, conversely, any other policy opens up the “it’s just satire” excuse for all kinds of nasty comments that are only appropriate in the Pit, and puts an unnecessary burden on the Mods to make a subjective call about whether something offensive really amounts to satire.
If you want to know what happened to a disappeared poster, thread, or post, you can PM or email a mod.
I think Asimovian’s notes were referring to satire/parody on that particular hot button topic, not necessarily to any or all satire/parody.
It’s long been a rule that if you want to make fun of another poster by parodying his thread or post, that goes in the Pit with a link to the post. From the Pit rules:
We have frequently had parody/satire threads in Cafe Society on books, movies, etc, such as “The Lord of the Rings as written by other authors” and other such threads.
Satire in order to express outrage or mockery I think is what’s most appropriate for the Pit.

Actually, posts like that are useful. In case anyone says something along the lines of gun nuts not necessarily being stupid, just having different values or something, you can say, “Oh, yeah? Allow me to cite some postings that will quickly change your mind”. And then you can point them to the brilliant writings of JBGUSA.
JBGUSA is a useful idiot that way. Utterly oblivious to his own raving stupidity, his various screeds instantly discredit whatever position he’s trying to take, imbuing his side of the argument with a stench that would nauseate a hog-nosed skunk seven miles downwind.

I’m not. The two links I cited sounded pretty chain-yanky to me, which, considering the subject, was quite scuzz-baggy of him.
