When I first was lurking this board in late 1999 people were bemoaning how “all the good ones are gone” and how the quality of the posters had slipped since the UBB days (which were relatively short). On UBB they waily, waily, waily’d the loss of the AOL groups and the alt. USENET forums. In the early-2000’s I remember people crying about how Kant, Daniel Webster, and William F. Buckley themselves were hanging out in Great Debates, and Stephen Hawking was as busy as Shiva answering physics questions in General Questions.
There are more trolls nowadays than there were, but overall this place is still so much better than 99% of the net.
