Omnibus Trolls R Us Thread

D’unningkruger will eventually stumble across a “gotcha” nut if he flails around with his cane long enough. Statistically it should’ve already happened by now, but he somehow keeps trodding on rake after rake.

How about upekizing? He seems a little off…

Yeah.

Reminds me of that DkTrdGuy.

I think I’ve mentioned Alfishius before, but their posting style might not rise to trolling, but it is very, very weird. Months between replies, usually bumping dead threads with a substanceless reply. Look at the end of this thread especially.

Eh, not going to do research on the poster in question, but if you are an irregular visitor & your first stop is the “subscriptions” page, that’s what would happen.

That’s weird. I’d have to look further to see if the posting history confirms JohnT’s theory. Don’t wanna.

Here’s a sampling from DJ Motorbike. He’s got an older join date, but he’s got some wacky views.

In the Trump’s Shutdown thread, sociopath WillFarnaby is having an Ayn Rand Wetdream.

And does that make him a troll, or just misguided? Do you think he’s posting that just to get a rise out of people, or because he really believes it? In this case, the worse case is the second, and I believe that’s the one that’s true.

On the SDMB, one who posts something they really believe in a manner deliberately designed to get a rise out of people is still a troll.

I think it’s just true in general. There’s no real difference between a true believer who posts to piss people off and someone who doesn’t believe a word they say. The important part is that they are trying to get a rise out of people, not whether or not they really mean it.

Limiting it to things you don’t mean also makes it hard to moderate, as a troll can just claim they really believe it, and it’s difficult to prove them wrong. Since it stirs up the same shit either way, it makes sense to treat it the same.

Agreed. He’s the poster child of the “F*** You, I Got Mine” meme of the modern conservative wing.

Well, I think this needs clarification. Publishing Charlie Hebdo is not trolling. Walking into a mosque wearing a t-shirt with a Charlie Hebdo cartoon is trolling. We have no general right not to be offended, just that people not be total jerks.

If someone holds sincere political views they have every right to express them in a thread on that topic, however much they might annoy us. Under those circumstances, the difference between views that annoy some people and views that are designed solely to annoy people is adequately captured by the concept of “sincerity”.

We can, however, reasonably expect such views not to pop up constantly to derail threads on barely-related topics.

The rules aren’t quite specific on this point but I’ll agree with Riemann that just because something offends does not mean that it was intended to offend. Folks are, of course, free to think that someone is a troll because they posted something that ticks them off; since intent is so difficult to prove, I prefer to jerk my knee a little more carefully.

I present ChunkyLord. Meditation is his game. Well, one meditation app. One specific one. Won’t you try it for 30 days?

He’s apparently been around since '16. But yeah, several threads in a row about his new found beloved cult leader.

And as soon as one is closed, he pops up in a different forum. One thread started with a long couple of paragraphs that was inoffensive and thoughtful… until the last sentence, where sho nuff… he just HAS to turn it into a commercial. Which, in my opinion, negated so much of what he’d just said.

I laughed at the first reply to his latest…

Why isn’t he considered a spammer? TRY THE APPPPPPPPPP!

No, really, I have some genuinely outrageous ideology, which I believe makes sense, but it would almost certainly alienate others here, so I keep it in the box (next to the ambiguity), because if I go freaking people out, I become marginalized (cf. Will Farnaby). And honestly, if you want a conversation, what good does it do to drive other people off? Better to gently nudge them toward the precipice.

And besides, I have come to the conclusion that we are all wrong in out deep-seated beliefs. Better to find the balance of wrongness that is likely to work out for the best. So, fuck the trolls off. There is enough pissiness to go around without them adding to it.
