As someone who has worked in a prison, I can speak to the term being used with great frequency there. Not sure if it originated there, but it’s well-known enough to not need an explanation when it’s used.
I’m hesitant to ask the moderating staff to reveal the red flags that inspire deeper probing into a poster’s bona fides, but I wonder if one of them is that they create a new account, then wait several months before they make their first post.
In the case of the Duke (who registered in February), his entire output consists of 21 posts, the first of which came less than three weeks ago (highly incendiary, followed by a mundane one within the hour; then 19 more just yesterday, many of them non-political and normal-looking).
Personally, I’m leaning against sock, although that may reveal more about my own aptitude as a sock-hunter than anything else.

I’ll be very honest–it’s really hard for me think the guy is legit in general, because normal people don’t act like he does. But, at the very least, this is some obvious trolling.
