Howdy, folks.
For as long as I can remember, when you hear a harp go “duuuea-duuuea-duuuea-duea!” in a rising scale in a movie, you just know there’s a dream sequence, or possibly a fantasy, coming up. Earliest example I can think of is Spellbound from 1945, but it sure wouldn’t surprise me if they had live harps introducing the dream sequences in the silent film era, or even at the operas back in the old days…
Anyhoo, here goes: Which seems to be the earliest example of a movie where harps playing rising scales signify we’re in for a dream sequence?
