Yeah, they didn’t really chastise the contestants last night until after the first few. But you understand, these are the top 18 out of 50 who were picked out of a few thousand. They’re actually predisposed to like this bunch.
…
“Spaced Out” was good enough.
Shalini’s short made it. I’m relieved.
Mateen’s “Soft” was an old joke. But it was OK.
So it’s down to Jason, Jessica, & Phil, with one of those going home & one getting an encore. I’m guessing Jessica’s going home. At least Jason can sort of write. Is it too much to hope that Phil gets the encore?..
Jason got the encore. No shock. He’s a bit callous, but he has technique. “Getta Rhoom” was well-made. Also a cartoon, though. In fact, the top 3 were all basically Saturday morning cartoons. Who’s watching & voting on this show?
Then again, the career trajectory of John Hughes may be telling us something about America.
So is the 3rd loser British Phil or Brooklyn Jessica? Is it xenophobia or misogyny? I’ll say it’s xenogynophobia, & Jess goes since she’s an arty New Yorker & as alien to middle-American schoolchildren as a British guy, who at least is a native Anglo. Then again, the absurdism of her film might appeal to Bugs Bunny fans, who clearly are dominant here…
Nope, it’s Phil.
I have a theory: Maybe the voting audience is so small that people are being buoyed by their hometown friends, & since only Americans can vote, the foreigners are screwed. Or the Fox network has so alienated non-xenophobes that too few of us even knew this was on.
Right as I posted this, my mom called. “Did you see what they did? …It’s not about how good they were, it’s anti-non-American.”
