On the Lot (May 28-29) (Possible open SPOILERS)

Anyone else watching this? My mom called me last week to tell me it was on; she thought it was something I would like, since I like competitive reality shows & have been putting off film school for years.

Stylistically, it’s Rock Star: INXS for directors.

I really dig Claudia’s “Blind Date” short & the first guy’s “Dance Man.”

“Wack Alley Cab” by the skateboard video guy was the absolute worst, I think.

My husband is a member of an amateur filmmakers’ group (he mostly does the behind-the-scenes technical stuff). He’s very interested in this series. I’m somewhat less interested, but I’ll keep watching because it’s fun to talk to hubby about it afterward.

Oh, man. I love Phil now for what he said to Jason about his little brother being mentally disabled & how Jason’s short offended him. Or maybe I’m just an Anglophile.

Jason is so oblivious to how offensive he is.

Kenny “Wack Alley Cab” Luby thinks America liked it? O-blivious!

So Zach (“Danger Zone”) is the Wunderkind? Bah! I don’t object to him getting an encore, though.

This Sam Friedlander (“Replication Theory”) is really good, though. I liked his better than Zach’s.

Shira-Lee’s “Check Out” was cute.

Trever’s “A Golf Story” had good acting, I thought.

OK, I’m cool with all these being safe.

Carolina of the long Spanish name vs. Marty for elimination? Fair enough. I hope Marty loses, since he didn’t do the assignment.

But in my quick ranking of the films last night, Carolina’s “Deliver Me” was 14th & Marty’s was 15th, & I gave her a bunch of votes as one of the probably weakest links among the contestants who didn’t suck.

Ah, Marty beat her. I’m sad.
“Dance Man” was a favorite of mine, I’m glad Adam is safe.

Oh, David was the “File Size” guy? I’d failed to connect his face to his work.

Hilary’s “Bus #1” appealed to me, & I don’t even have a 3-year-old!

Hey, it’s Texas guy. I guess live-action Chuck Jones riffs are popular. But top 3? It was total Chuck Jones!!!

Kenny vs. Claudia? Claudia better stay!

Kenny’s safe??? I’m so offended! His short was bargain-basement podunk late-night locally-made commercial nonsense!

It’s misogyny, is what it is! Or maybe xenophobia against the Spaniard & the Italian…
I had to stop watching this show 25 minutes into it. I can’t believe that Mark Burnett and Speilberg are behind this atrocity. First off, the hostess: She is sleazy looking and sounding, insincere, and apparently learned only two hand gestures at Route 23 Broadcasting School (the prayer and the Montgomery Burns.) I had to FF through her entire shtick. Second, the judges are utterly spineless. I don’t think I’d mind nearly as much if they didn’t waste time trying to figure out how to say they didn’t like while not outright saying it in five different ways. Utterly painful

Yeah, they didn’t really chastise the contestants last night until after the first few. But you understand, these are the top 18 out of 50 who were picked out of a few thousand. They’re actually predisposed to like this bunch.

“Spaced Out” was good enough.

Shalini’s short made it. I’m relieved.

Mateen’s “Soft” was an old joke. But it was OK.

So it’s down to Jason, Jessica, & Phil, with one of those going home & one getting an encore. I’m guessing Jessica’s going home. At least Jason can sort of write. Is it too much to hope that Phil gets the encore?..

Jason got the encore. No shock. He’s a bit callous, but he has technique. “Getta Rhoom” was well-made. Also a cartoon, though. In fact, the top 3 were all basically Saturday morning cartoons. Who’s watching & voting on this show?

Then again, the career trajectory of John Hughes may be telling us something about America.

So is the 3rd loser British Phil or Brooklyn Jessica? Is it xenophobia or misogyny? I’ll say it’s xenogynophobia, & Jess goes since she’s an arty New Yorker & as alien to middle-American schoolchildren as a British guy, who at least is a native Anglo. Then again, the absurdism of her film might appeal to Bugs Bunny fans, who clearly are dominant here…

Nope, it’s Phil.

I have a theory: Maybe the voting audience is so small that people are being buoyed by their hometown friends, & since only Americans can vote, the foreigners are screwed. Or the Fox network has so alienated non-xenophobes that too few of us even knew this was on.

Right as I posted this, my mom called. “Did you see what they did? …It’s not about how good they were, it’s anti-non-American.”

never mind, the thread’s overhere
