This thread reminds me of a hilarious phone call President Lyndon Johnson made to his tailor, that was taped and preserved as part of his presidency’s official record:
*I want 'em half an inch larger in the waist than they were before. The pockets when I sit down in the chair, the knife and your money comes out. So I need at least another inch in the pockets. Another thing - the crotch, down where your nuts hang - is always a little too tight, because they cut me, it’s like riding a wire fence. See if you can’t leave me an inch from where the zipper (burp) ends, right back to my bunghole. *
I am left handed and definately dress right.
I asked my tailor about this, and he told me
he allows slightly more room on the “dress”
side to avoid shocking ladies, and he offsets
the zipper so as not to chafe the head. :eek:He told
me the majority of right handed men dress left
and most left handed men dress right.:dubious:
Ha. When I was a young man, I used to consciously try to change it up, in an effort to avoid the dreaded banana dong.
I gave up, eventually - the natural lie is to the right. (And just as well, since the feedback I’ve had over the intervening decades is that there’s some benefit to a little bit of a curve.)
I naturally hang to the left. But I discovered years ago that when wearing boxers and jeans, if I manually position the whole package to the right, it created a noticeable bulge which, I later learned, was appreciated by my girlfriend and some of the other girls in class.
I recently ordered a suit from one of these touring/Hong Kong tailors, and wasn’t asked The Question when I did the fitting. I was rather disappointed, actually–it seems to be so much a part of the ritual of getting a tailored suit!
Actually just got it, and wearing it (along with my custom shirt from the same outfit) for the first time today. I’m not an expert, but IMO it looks better than any other suit I’ve ever worn. I’m sure I’d get better if I went to Saville Row, but for the price, it’s very hard to find fault with what I’ve got. If I’ve got a complaint, it’s that I’d like to be showing a bit more cuff–but I think this may depend a great deal on whether I’ve got the suit buttoned or not. (Need to experiment in the mirror a bit.) As I figure it, the suits are fairly comparable in price to a decent (say, Brooks Brothers) OTR suit, so it’s worth taking a chance. Or, if you’re not quite so daring, go for a shirt first–pick a fairly inexpensive fabric and the worst you’ll be out is $100 or so. Then you can make an informed decision based on the fit and finish of the shirt.
The place I went with was mytailor.com, which had good reviews on a (rather traditional) men’s style forum that I sometimes frequent. I’m sure there are other good ones out there, though. Good luck!
