On your feet: Gloria Estefan musical

I honestly thought this was a joke the first time I heard of it. I’m not sure it’s worth giving it a chance even with $20 ticket prices.

But, I’ll let the more educated theatre Dopers check in. Maybe there’s something that I’m missing in the life of Gloria Estefan that makes it worthy of a musical.

I’ll admit, I wasn’t expect much from Beautiful: The Carole King musical. However, Beautiful absolutely blew me away with how great it was. I saw it twice and would happily see it again.

Do I give On Your Feet a chance with some discounted tickets? Or will I be like I was doing Love Never Dies and just be grateful for a strong cocktail during intermission?

If you can wait until the beginning of June, I can tell you – I have tickets (part of our subscription).

From what I know about her, they can probably concentrate on her rise to success and her comeback after she was seriously injured in a bus crash. I’m sure they can work with that – Jersey Boys didn’t have a lot of drama, but still worked.

All I can say on the matter is to not underestimate Gloria’s reach.

As a man married to a full-blooded Cuban I can tell you Gloria is HUGE in that community, absolutely HUGE.

I work in the Broadway industry and have a few friends who were in the Broadway production. I agree with you, I can name, like, one Gloria Estefan song and thought there was no way they could make this work. And I’m not saying they did, entirely. But it actually had a pretty decent run in New York, and the reviews were mixed, if I recall. So, I would say if tickets are only 20 bucks, what do you have to lose? At the very least it’ll be an evening of high-energy music that makes you want to dance, so why not?

How much do you like her music? The point of these bio musicals is not to have a thoughtful, emotionally challenging story. The point is to listen to the songs of someone whose music you enjoy.

I love Billy Joel, so my family took me to see the Billy Joel musical “Moving Out” for my birthday. I loved every second of it, because Billy is one of my favorite songwriters, and I knew and enjoyed every song. The rest of my family hated it and thought it was terrible (but who cares, the birthday girl had fun :D)

I agree that “Beautiful” was great, with a strong book and music.

Saw it recently at the Kennedy Center. Go for the music, not for the drama. If you don’t like her music, don’t go.
