I posted a similar thread last year and the recommendation was Runes of Magic. I tried that and it failed badly because it’s right-hand only and kept crashing.
I’m looking for a free(mium) WoW clone that supports left-handed usage without too much fuss. The genre should be fantasy, not sci-fi. Most important, it’s got to be fun.
So once again, I ask Dopers, “Which game will suit me?”
What do you mean the game is right-hand only? Any decent game should let you remap the hotkeys. I admit I’m right handed so I may not understand what you’re asking …
Lord of the Rings Online is going free-to-play. You can download the client and start playing. As your character levels up, you earn points you can spend in the store to buy goodies. You can also just buy points outright if you want. Lotro’s a wow clone in terms of interface and gameplay but the character system is rather different. And of course, the story and setting can’t be beat. If you haven’t tried it, it’s well worth a look.
Just that: the authors expect you to be using a mouse in your right hand. Now, because when just starting, I don’t know what I’m doing, I need the game to support left-handed use straight off, or a left-handed setup to be easily available. Neither were the case for RoM.
Is there a way for the game to detect if you’re using a left-handed mouse and proceed accordingly? What games have worked for you the way you want them to?
What OS & mouse software are you using? I’m using a logitech mouse on Win 7 and there’s an option in the Control Panel mouse settings for inverting the mouse - if you do that, wouldn’t it reflect in all your software?
I’m using Windows 7 with a Kensington trackball, and no, it’s not always reflected in the software. Precious few games actually autodetect the left-handed setting. With most games I’ve played, this is easy to fix. With RoM it was not.
I’m giving Runes of Magic another go. They actually have an option to invert the mouse now, which is good, but I must be doing something wrong, because if I leave the option off, RoM acts left-handed in-game, but right-handed in the UI, but if I check it, it’s right-handed throughout.
And how do I sell to the merchants in the starting village when I’ve completed their quests? I went and did the quests, got them checked off, couldn’t sell to them, so sold in Logar (?) only to find the quests uncompleted. Grr…
Watch out for bears in LotRO. They make up 90% of the ecosystem. Plus, some of them are ninja drop-bears that can appear out of thin air to fall on your head.
Okay, that’s probably not fair–that was just my perception of the Shire right after the game launched, and I know they changed a lot of stuff. Now that it’s going free-to-play, I may download it again to see what’s different. I bet the chickens and hungry hobbits still have X-ray vision, though.
I don’t think so. I was able to hide behind terrain while doing those quests. They -do- have eyes in the back of their heads though. No facing based detection for non-stealth people.
