Once Upon A Time [edited title]

Once Upon A Time premieres tonight at 8/7c on ABC.

From the “About the Show” page in the link above:

Anybody going to give it a watch? Interesting premise, but it will all depend on the execution. The previews I’ve seen make it look like they aren’t trying to play it too subtle, which I think is a good thing. I wonder how much of it will be in full-on fairytale mode and how much will be set in “reality.” How much will be flashbacks, and how much will be the present?

I would watch it for no other reason than Robert Carlyle, who I think is brilliant. I also really like Jennifer Morrison (she played Cameron on House).

The other new fairytale show is Grimm, which premieres Friday on NBC. It’ll be interesting to compare and contrast the two, and to see if either one survives the season. I don’t hold out much hope anymore for scifi or fantasy shows on the big four networks, but we’ll see.

I got it to record tonight…I think both it and Grimm sound really interesting and I want to watch both duke it out for the fairy tale crown

I liked it enough to watch some more.

Curious about the relationship between Rumplestiltskin and the Evil Queen.

I watched it with my wife. We both thought it was OK. It didn’t bowl us over with awesomeness, but at least we both will watch next week’s episode.

My wife didn’t think Jennifer Morrison could pass for a 28-year-old, which is funny since Morrison is only 32.

We liked it, but I can’t stand it when fiction states modern life is some unremitting hell compared to the lovely days of yore, so I might have some problems with this show.

I liked it. Not amazing, but pretty good. They did a good job of covering both the back story and the current timeline. I wonder how much the evil queen and Rumplestiltskin in the real world know. Are they aware of who they really are?

I knew there were going to be all sorts of fairy tale characters in Storybrooke, but I wasn’t expecting Jiminy Cricket!

I’m interested to see how it all plays out this season. How long can they sustain the premise of these characters not knowing who they really are? Once they do know, then what?

I watched the pilot last month during a long flight to Japan. It intrigued me enough that I decided to watch the next few episodes.

I didn’t believe she was 28 either. I’m not saying she’s ugly, but I thought she was closer to 35.

I thought they had some interesting ideas, but the writing was pretty weak. It felt like they were having some trouble adding depth to the fairy tale world. A lot of the characters were doing things for no particular reason other than the story required it- the example that stuck out the most was the prince letting the wicked queen utter her terrible curse on the kingdom, then throwing his sword at her only after she finished talking and turned to leave. (For that matter, he also yelled “Hey!” at her before throwing it.) Perhaps he could have tried to stop her from completing her curse? I guess that’s the trouble with being Prince Charming. Interrupting people when they’re cursing you is rude and trying to kill them without giving them a heads-up is unsporting. I had trouble with Emma as a bounty hunter in heels, and then they had her drop everything to drive Henry 300 miles or so. I admit they explained her decision well at the end.

I was kind of amused to see that Doc is an obstetrician and I thought it was hilarious that “someplace horrible” was Maine. I don’t think the state tourism bureau is going to be very happy with them.

Since I mostly disliked the episode I’ll give them credit for something I thought was (unlike these) deliberately funny: having the wicked queen offer Emma a glass of cider. That was clever. Not as clever: real-world Snow White’s last name is Blanchard. Blanche = White. DO YOU GET IT??

Not to mention the bowl of lovely apples sitting before her as she drank her highball.

What the hell good is it to steal everyone’s happy ending if they have no idea who they are or what they had? What kind of vengeance is that?

Not bad, not spectacularly good. I kind of wonder how they’ll explain why the queen sentenced herself to the same fate as the others, though.

I think the Queen knows, though.

It wasn’t half bad. I noticed that ABC is using the Disney versions of the characters. I hope that doesn’t get in the way of good storytelling. I doubt that Disney would allow any of characters to do anything morally ambiguous.

Almost exactly my thoughts on both the episode and her apparent age. She doesn’t look bad, but I would have guessed she’s at least 35.

That didn’t bother me so much, mostly I think because I’m the age she’s supposed to be and people either card me or think I’m in my mid 30s depending on how I dress/do makeup that day. shrugs I think unless there are obvious signs of someone’s age it’s possible to be ambiguous.

Based on previews for next week I think the Queen knows. Really, why curse everyone, including herself, and not remember to enjoy?

Marley23:

Didn’t Stephen King pretty much seal this for them?

I must have missed it… where did we see that Doc was an OB?

I liked it. It’s on at the same time as Amazing Race, though, so I’ll be watching it on Hulu on Mondays.
Ginnifer Goodwin and Jennifer Morrison really do resemble each other, don’t they? I started out thinking Morrison was Snow White, and the baby she was carrying was the little boy.

It wasn’t bad enough for me to stop watching yet, and it could be interesting. But I don’t have a lot of time to add another TV show to my schedule, so it will have to get better in the next few episodes to keep me on board.

I also missed the “Doc as the OB.” Oh wait, was that at Emma’s birth? We haven’t seen any dwarves in the modern world yet have we?

Who was “Granny” and the girl at the B&B? I wanted to guess the girl was Red Riding Hood (she had a red scarf).

I think it was Red Riding Hood and her grandmother.

Grumpy was in the adjoining cell, IIRC.

I thought it was overly cute. I probably won’t watch it, although I wonder if the father of the kid will become a plot point.
