Wow they did a fantastic job of deaging Regina and casting young Snow (and they both were great acting those roles). I wonder if she’s related to the actress.
My theory is that when Regina turned evil, she didn’t hate her mother any more (“my Mother just wants the best for me, and I’m the best EQ I can be”) but her hate and grief had to turn to someone and the only two people available were her father (who never protected her from mama) and Snow (who betrayed her, inadvertently). She couldn’t give up her daddy (yet), so Snow became the target.
I was so impressed by young Snow’s striking resemblence, both in appearance (including movements) and mannerism, that I had to stop watching in mid-episode and go find out. I had wild ideas that they had a sister or even daughter of Goodwin’s, or that the animation and sound people had had a field day, or something.
Young Snow was played by an experienced 13 year old actress named Bailee Madison. Apparently no relation. I’m guessing that she’s like young Haley Joel Osment - another remarkably sophisticated actor at a mind-blowingly young age. Or, maybe she’s just naturally a stunningly good mimic. In either case, I’m guessing that she’s been watching the show from the start, and thus was already familiar with Ginnifer Goodwin’s performance. I can’t believe she could have come in cold and picked her up that quickly.
Plus, Snow, being that age, is going to be annoying. Add that to the starting place of Regina’s hatred and Snow doesn’t have a chance.
It will be interesting to see when Regina starts using magic, and whether or not she realizes she’s become her mother right down to the heart-extracting.
Someone said Regina’s mom was a miller’s daughter. I wonder if she will be the miller’s daughter that Rumplstilskin spun straw into gold for.
Well, there are no coincidences, so if we’ve heard of a millers daughter before, chances are…
And yes, young Snow was bang on for expressions, tone, and mannerisms. It was distractingly impressive.
I’m still thinking that either Sydney or Regina faked the DNA results since we know they gave Emma fake phone records earlier. My guess is that Katherine was being held somewhere. Gold said he was going to “work some magic” (or something like that); he found where Katherine was and brought her back.
Me too! An episode where the good guys come out ahead!
I’ll tepidly disagree. I suspect Regina hated her mother just as much as, or more than, she hated Snow White; her attitudinal change was intended to put both parties’ guards down. This is the first we see of the mother, isn’t it? Ten to one odds Regina will’ve offed her mother at some point before the Genie/Sydney’s rescue by King Leopold.
(Or her father will … that I could almost see. I’d like to get more from the character than selfless doting father.)
The prosecutor was King George, right? Seeing how at the time of Regina’s curse James and Snow White were (or seemed to be) the recognized monarchs of at least some kingdom or other, I assumed George must have died.
August = Pinocchio? “I’m not a liar.” Also, another hint at the TrOLL BRIDGE, when he twists his leg. It sounded a lot like wood snapping.
I like this show, although it’s not one of the greatest. It’s much better than I woulc ever think it could be, given the premise. The hardest part of watching this show is the opening credits, when i think to myself, “how did this show ever get approved?”
Looks like that might be the case. I was buying into him being Rumpelstiltskin’s son during tonight’s episode, until the twist.
Great job by Robert Carlyle, as usual.
Something’s gotta happen to bring Mary Margaret and David back together, but what?
Only three episodes left this season. I am not expecting any real resolution to the Regina storyline, because I think the whole series collapses when you wrap that up. I’m still thinking something has to happen soon to make Emma believe that Henry’s right about his book and the people of Storybrooke.
When I found out that tonight’s show was a Rumple episode, I knew it was going to be a good one. He is, by far, the most interesting character. By accident, Jane Espenson has written all the Rumple episodes.
I liked the twist, but I rather wish that Booth was Mr. Gold, Jr. That would have been great for the show in the future. Where the fuck is his son? Who the fuck is Booth, for reals?
Regina vs. Emma, the war for Henry begins. My prediction is they get joint custody, like a bitter divorced couple.
If this world has no magic, how did Regina kill the Huntsman? Maybe he’s not dead like Kathryn wasn’t dead.
Interesting. I had that same thought in the beginning, although I didn’t catch the wood snapping sound when he injured his leg. That would be a nice twist.
The fact that he is so invested in getting someone to believe him fits in with the character. Also, perhaps the fact that he wasn’t born as a real boy is what gave him some measure of immunity to the spell and gives him awareness of his past and his ability to live outside Storybrooke.
I’ll have to say I totally bought into the premise of his being Rumplestiltskin’s son. I’m almost sad it didn’t pan out. He’s a wonderful character, illustrating that corruption is capable of corrupting someone who was initially a good man, but offering some level or redemption by suggesting that his love for his son may ultimately be able to overpower the corruption.
