Seems that Angelos managed to get a law passed banning ticket sales, not just right outside the gates of OP@CY, but everywhere within a mile of Camden Yards.
Here’s the story of Brian Adams, who had some Orioles’ tickets he couldn’t use, and made the mistake of trying to sell them near the ballpark. He wasn’t even scalping; he was offering them at a discount, so he didn’t have to eat the entire price. Big mistake, it turned out.
As reported in the Burton on the Bay column in Anne Arundel County’s Bay Weekly:
Speaking as a Virginian this sort of thing is reason #5-ka-jillion that I’m hoping for a team in DC. Angelos has RUINED a proud franchise with his football mentality and they’re not gonna pull out of it until he and his sons are gone.
The next time someone opens their mouth about Steinbrenner, all I have to do is point at this yo-yo.
They will never win with him as an owner. Never.
As such, I hope he stays there forever!
Yer pal,
Satan
I HAVE BEEN SMOKE-FREE FOR:
Three months, one week, five days, 13 hours, 16 minutes and 8 seconds.
4142 cigarettes not smoked, saving $517.76.
Life saved: 2 weeks, 9 hours, 10 minutes.
Or the constituency didn’t know about such law.
Or the constituency has gotten used to their elected official scratching the back of their big donors occasionally.
Or the constituency just no longer care about said issues, and is just voting for someone who won’t fuck up the city.
Why didn’t the guy go to the Scalp Free Zone to unload his tickets?
It is on the… oh let’s see, southwest side of the stadium I think (it’s across from Pickle’s Pub) and it is there for people who have tickets they can’t use. They can sell for up to face value -but no more- and I think it’s great.
If ever I get the urge to see the Orioles (doesn’t happen all that frequently lately), I can go straight to the Scalp Free Zone and get great seats for that day’s game.
It is an idea that other stadiums should implement and I’m surprised the guy you cited didn’t know about it.
It is certainly a lot better than going back and forth with scalpers, getting a crappy deal, and putting up with all of that haggling nonsense.
Reason Number One to hate Peter Angelos: the way he’s set himself up as the “savior of Baltimore”–the newspaper even has fairly regular articles and op-eds on what a wonderful guy he is.
