The last time I used this trick it was to buy a house. This time, I’m using the SDMB’s powers to…well…buy a house.
We’ve sold this place, so we have two months to get out stuff packed up and get out. We looked at houses today, and in the area we’re looking to go and our price range, it kinda breaks down like this: 6 or 7 crapholes that would be better off torched, and one beautiful house that perfectly suits our needs. So, the offer has been submitted (errr…on the nice place, that is).
The owners have an offer on the table already, but their agent seems to think we’re putting in a more attractive one than they’ve seen so far. Now we just need to hope no one counterofferers. We’ve gone back and forth with the agent three times already, and we’re at the absolute 100% maximum we can do. If we’re outbid, we’re basically SOL, and it’ll be time to start looking for rental units.
Nah…scroll back up to post #15 in that thread. The neighborhood is bad, they have a baby they don’t want to raise in the kind of area where there are drive-by shootings, and they want to be closer to family.
Not at all. Simple fact is, it’s hard to lose money in real estate. We’ve bought and sold homes as the course of our lives dictated. The fact that we made money doesn’t make us “speculators” (although I do find it funny that you make it sound like that’s a dirty word).
Anyway, as kittenblue said, the neighborhood isn’t as great as we had hoped, and we want to be closer to family. We love the house we live in, and wish it were possible to take it with us. The owner of the other half of this duplex might have a problem with that idea, though.
One of the main goals here is for my wife wife to be able to be a stay-at-home mom. If we get a place close by her sister, than she’ll be able to watch our nephew as well (my SIL hates her current day care situation, so paying my wife to be the day care would work out perfect for everyone).
Well, if you don’t get the house you want, you could always try to get onto HGTV’s Hidden Potential show. Of course, that tends to require a willingness to deal with renovation for a while …
