About as good as any data from a message board poll.:dubious:
As a starting point for an interesting discussion, I’d say the poll did it’s job.
I voted yes, 35-45, and other. I don’t keep up as much with the newer music as I used to, but a lot of that comes with having kids. I do however try and keep up a bit with newer metal and sometimes find new bands. I do keep up with the music I’ve been listening to for years as well. I also try and go to concerts every so often. The kids however dominate the music. Though I can get my oldest, 4, to throw the devil horns while rocking out to Priest.
Yeah, I meant to make the poll public, where you could see who voted what, and after a few people posted I realized that I should have made the yes/no and age combo choices, such as under 20/yes, under/20 no, ect…
Oh well, I screwed up, but it’s my first poll. I’ve learned from it and won’t make the same mistakes again.
Brave try with all the choices. Good luck on your next one.
One I’d really like to see would be one that tries to settle that comic hero issue.
Another would be an improved “where do we live?” thing that wasn’t just for the top 20 cities.
38 here. I have always heavily been into music, my main love is progressive rock. I chose Other.
I always kept up with rock music as a kid, but (IMO!) when Nirvana came along in late '91 - when I was 20 - popular rock music was ruined, and never recovered. (I’m not talking about idiotic bands like Poison; there was plenty of good stuff that came out of the '80s.) I pretty much gave up on it at that time, but I’ve followed the prog rock scene faithfully. Unfortunately, due to money constraints in the last several years (going to college instead of having a career), I’ve not been able to keep up as well as I like… I’m hoping that will change one day soon.
It’s impossible to avoid the larger acts that have come along - I know who Green Day and The White Stripes are, for instance, though I can’t see what all the fuss is about. But when I see blurbs on The Latest One Hit Wonder, I usually have no idea who they are, nor do I care.
I’m 29. I listen to lots and lots of new music, and I’m always hearing new bands that are amazing. But, I do not keep up at all with what’s popular. I tend to hear “how can you not know that song??” frequently. I can’t imagine ever not wanting to discover new music or being content to only listen to things I’ve heard before. But I also have little use for any format radio station or any other way of monitoring what’s popular.
43, and yes, yes I do. I’ll listen to a little bit of everything, but mostly I listen to pop. Here’s a link to my thread with a long list of current songs that old farts might enjoy.
Shamelessly promoting your own thread. You whore!!!
Seriously though, I like some pop*, but not enough to keep up with it. For instance, I couldn’t name you any Justin Timberlake songs, and what little I’ve heard from Beyoncé I don’t care for. Rob Thomas on his own seems more pop than when he’s with Matchbox 20 and I kind of like his work.
*Since pop seems to be a word with multiple meanings, here are some examples of what I mean by “pop”
Breath Your Name - Sixpence none the richer
I Want You - Savage Garden
West End Girls - Pet Shop Boys
I’m not sure I agree. I mean, as a non-audiophile I like hearing music, but I don’t care about it in the sense that it’s not a big part of my life.
That’s in no way comparable to “people who don’t read”, IMHO.
I keep up with pop and rock, but my preferred genre, Goth, basically ended for me around 2000. I have no interest in anything after that that I’ve heard so far, so I don’t bother to keep up anymore.
I’m 48 and have two 7 year olds, so yeah I’m hip to the Jonas Brothers and Justin Beiber
Other than that, I had to say No. It’s not that I don’t like today’s music, it’s just that I can’t keep up with it. Probably the most recent bands I’ve bothered looking into are Radiohead and maybe Tori Amos and their favorites of mine were put out almost a decade ago. I like some of the songs in the Garden State soundtrack but that was may 4-5 years ago. So much music, so little time!
I answered yes, but I don’t know how up to date I really am. I see lots of good music on Letterman’s show, so he helps me keep up somewhat. I’ve been listening to Pandora.com, so I’m hearing some new stuff there too, at least I think it’s new. I’m sure there are huge gaps though. And I’m over 50. I picked rock and pop but I’m ecclectic. About the only thing I don’t like is urban cowboy country.
Yes, I keep up as best I can. I have always loved music and always will. My parents were the same.
I am female, 55, came of age in the 70’s. I see live music as often as I can, went to the Voodoo Festival last Halloween. De Stijl is one of my all-time favorite albums; I enjoy everything from the White Stripes to the Avett Brothers.
I like the tinkly jangly indie stuff, I love the gypsy punk, the eastern European brass. But I like Feist, TV on the Radio, and the Roots, too. My tastes are fairly eclectic.
I have two grown sons.
I raised them on current music and now they return the favor, and other young friends help me stay in touch with what’s out there.
I am waiting for Spotify to come to the USA.
I am an oldster;I am not out clubbing every weekend.
It’s just that music did not end for me when I became a soccer mom.
Classic rock is fine, but I can only listen to so much of it.
And how can I miss if if it won’t go away?
No, but it has nothing to do with my age. I never really did.
Female, 32, grew up preferring rock, but also liked rap, R&B, some hip hop.
I keep up with music, but my way of hearing of new songs or artists has changed. I have no patience for radio anymore. I rely on friends’ or online recommendations. Also, once a month or so, I go through the iTunes Music Store and look for new music from old favorites and anything new and interesting.
I probably buy more music now than I ever have.
- No, I haven’t paid attention to music in about ten years. Inevitably you hear it around and about, but I have no idea who is who and why.
But then, I’ve never been much of a fan of music anyway, and barely listen to anything even on my own time.
Gee, thank you. Your condescending pity warms my heart.
It’s not like I’m a robot or anything. I can listen to music. I can prefer some to others, and be influenced by it. It just isn’t a strong influence. I’m not enraptured by the melodies or captivated by the harmonics like (presumably) you are. So I don’t spend a lot of time going out and listening to it.
I’m 35. I understand the phenomenon - it does seem like people past college age just concentrate on music from their youth - but I buy new music each week, and the music from my youth gradually gets paired down in terms of what I enjoy.
Yep…I have teenaged daughters, so I sometimes find myself listening to the same radio stations they do. The music scene is basically the same as it always was: some good stuff, some crap, some heavy stuff, some controversial stuff, etc. However, it seems that there isn’t any “one big act” these days.
A lot of the time, I am on online blogs, downloading albums. This is how I satisfy my interest in the more “historic” stuff.
What, showtunes gets a checkbox and metal doesn’t?
That’s why I don’t keep up with current music.
