yep - you’re busted, Birdmonster - here I am reading my Paste Magazine (a VERY cool magazine - like what you wish Rolling Stone really was and claims to have been like back in the day) - and there on Page 36:
4 to Watch - Paste Approved: Artists You Must Know
And the 2nd artist is the band Birdmonster, featuring our very own!
Congratulations!!
Great write up, too: “Arcuni’s (their vocalist, who is not our guy) unhinged vocals recall the whisper-to-scream theatrics of Black Francis and the Pixies, the song arrangements build from pensive acoustic openings to a glorious pin-your-ears-back din, and the musicial influences range from the shambolic swagger of The Replacements and the “New New Wave” basslines of The Strokes to the weathered Americana textures of The Band.”
Hmm. I noticed that in Paste (to which I’ve been a subscriber since Issue #1), and the name Birdmonster caught my eye, but… is there an actual connection to the SDMB’s Birdmonster, or am I being whooshed?
Will do.
Lot’s of good stuff coming up. Slim Cessna this Friday at the Bluebird, Alajandro Escovedo this Saturday at the Bluebird, The Giraffes are coming, No Means No is coming.
And of course, Mudhoney is at the Larimer for two nights this month.
Looks like it’s going to be a good fall in Denver for live music.
Wow, I did not realize our Birdmonster was a member of the Birdmonster. I was looking forward to seeing them later this month when they open for Somebody Still Loves You, Boris Yeltzin.
They’ve been getting a lot of music blog buzz. In fact, one of the bigger music blogs (Stereogum) is promoting three NYC area shows for them (along with the similarly buzzy Catfish Haven and Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin).
I have the album on order, and I’ve enjoyed the tracks I’ve found. (In fact, I played “'Cause I Can” on my radio show tonight.) But I had not put two and two together to connect the band to our Birdmonster. Very cool!
bumpity I finally found an issue of this magazine - in of all places, one of those newsstand stores in Midway Airport, on my way home from a conference - and checked out the article. Very cool! The live version of Ice Age is on my iPod now, via the Myspace page, and I’ll definitely check out more of their music.
