One of TV's most infamous episodes rediscovered

This weekend Antenna TV Network will air for the first time in 25 years the “Monroe Gets Raped” episode of Too Close For Comfort. In case you forgot, “Too Close…” was a generic early 80s sitcom best remembered for the really effeminite male character Monroe. Well in 1986 somebody though it was funny to have him raped by two strange women. The episode was so bizarre many people thought it was an urban legend, that nobody would be stupid enough to think it was a good idea. Any other oddball TV episodes you would like to see again (or for that matter entirely wiped out)?

It never happened. You were dreaming. Let it go.

That short film is brilliant.

TVtropes has a list of missing episodes. Monroe-gets-raped doesn’t appear to be on it. I found that list last year when I was looking for the notorious autoerotic asphyxiation episode of the original Hawaii Five-O (“Bored She Hung Herself”).

I would not consider the particular episode of Too Close for Comfort, described in the OP as one of “TV’s most famous episodes”. Maybe one of the OP’s most memorable, but hardly universally famous. I would hardly consider any episode of Too Close for Comfort as one of TV’s most famous episodes.

I best remember it for Ted Knight’s two daughters.

Is it weird that I most remember the show because of the paint job in the girls’ apartment?

Infamous, for sure.

I remember two things with crystal clarity from Too Close for Comfort:

The episode where the girls have a party, and Ted freaks out. “What’s that smell? They’re smoking pot down there!” “Relax, it’s just incense.” “Oh… whew.” “They use it to cover up the smell of the pot.” “!”

…and the episode where the gay guy was raped by the two lesbians, and Ted haad to give them a stern talking to. Everyone remembers Arnold nearly getting diddled by Mr. Carlson, but (pre-internet) I had many people accuse me of putting them on when describing this episode. I’m glad that it’ll be rebroadcast again.

So so bizarre.

Okay. To me, “Arnold” is either a pig OR the guy who owns a drive-in in Milwaulkee while the only Mr Carlson I know runs a radio statio in Cincinnati.

I must be old.

It’s that Mr. Carlson. If I remember correctly, one of Arnold’s friends did get buggered. It all had something to do with bikes and Mrs. Garrett.

Arnold was Gary Coleman’s character on Diffr’nt Strokes. He was almost molested by a character played by Gordon Jump (Mr. Carlson, WKRP). Arnold’s friend Dudley may have been molested. At least he came even closer than Arnold.

What about the infamous “in the butt, Bob” answer on the Newlywed Game?

Ben Stein actually did a game show special on which he found that episode- Bob Eubanks, who had always sworn that never really happened, was on the show to acknowledge, well, okay, it did happen… though the details weren’t exactly the way urban legend has always told.

Then there was the “Millionaire” episode where the female contestant tells Meredeth that “I can’t quite finger your anus.”

Uranus actually. It’s on Youtube.
