One year ago today

One year ago today (2-18-09) I had gastric bypass surgery. Starting weight: 240 pounds, today’s weight: 132 pounds

Congrats and Happy Surgiversary!!!

Congratulations, catflea12! Glad to hear that it worked out so well for you.

Congratulations. I wish you luck on keeping off the pounds!

Well done, cat. How do you feel? Did you have any complications? What are your meals like now?

I feel great, usually. I did have some problems with my gall bladder, but that’s over now. I eat pretty much anything, just watch total fat and calories. This usually means not much fried food and limited sweets. Really high sugar stuff like frosting or ice cream makes me sick now.

Do you have before and now pictures? Congrats, by the way.

That is awesome! My sister just had lap-band surgery, and I hope she’s as happy with her one-year results are you are with yours. Congrats!

Which surgery did you have? I’m considering it as well.

Well done!

I know someone who had this and about 4 months later got pregnant. She jokingly said if she knew she was going to get pregnant, she would have waited. Anyway…she is much happier now that she has lost weight, and I hope you are, too.

I had the roen-n-y (spelling?) procedure. I am very happy with the results, just remember you really can’t eat very much at a time usually only 1-2 ounces, depending on how much liquid is in the food. I can eat a larger amount of soup, etc because of the liquid, up to about a cup and half, if I go slowly enough.

I would post before and after pictures if I knew how to do that. I thought I did, guess not

Congratulations - that’s wonderful.

I lost the same amount of weight about 5 years ago without surgery and I’ve always been curious about how it feels and works after surgery. (Please don’t read any criticism into that because I think that what you went through is far more difficult and takes way more courage than I had.)

I know that I still want to eat even if there is no reason why I should be physically hungry, and that most of my hunger is in my head and not my stomach. Do you still want to overeat but you just can’t because of the surgery, or do you feel satisfied with the small amounts and not have to say no to yourself all the time? Is it possible to slowly start to eat more and (for lack of a better understanding) stretch your stomach out again?

I feel pretty full with the smaller amounts I eat. The surgeon said it was possible to stretch my stomach back out to a certain extent although not as much as it was before. The way I eat now, I practice portion control, keep a food diary, watch fat content of food, eat more salads

Roux-en-Y.

Congratulations on getting there fast. From my records, the average loss is 67% of excess body weight at 12 months. Looks like you’re closing in on 100%

Totally ignorant question coming, but I had always assumed that gastric bypass and lap-band were for people heavier than you. In other words, 240lbs sounds light to me. If you don’t mind me asking how old and how tall are you?

And by the way, congratulations! Awesome job.

I just made the 100 pounds overweight requirement, (the operation won’t be approved if you are less than that overweight) I was also diabetic, and the operation took care of that, no more insulin or other diabetic meds. I am 55 years old, and 5’5’’ tall. How the heck do you link to pictures? I’d post before and after pictures if I could figure out how to do it again.

I have in excess of 100 lbs to lose so that won’t be a problem. I’m concerned about the lifelong effects of a very permanent surgery. Just the thought of having to concentrate on eating 2 oz of food for a meal just makes my physically ill.

You don’t, you post links to pictures that are hosted elsewhere. You simply post your pictures on any file/photo hosting site - flickr, filebucket or whatever - then post the URL link they give you here.

catflea, that is awesome. Congratulations on your new health and body. If I could just respectfully give one piece of advice - and I say this because everybody I’ve personally known who has gotten the surgery has gained the weight back - deal with the issues that got you to 100lbs overweight in the first place, because if you don’t, you are going to wind up back where you started. Good luck!
