You can catch the whole game on ESPN360.com.
Actually, I don’t see the game listed on that site, although it seems every other game so far has been added. Maybe it will be added in a few hours.
It was pretty clear from our replays at the time that the German player trod on Ronaldo’s foot. It didn’t look particularly malicious or serious to me, but maybe I am biased against the pouting ladyboy. If it was intentional, and the officials saw it, then yes, it should have been a card, possibly red. But I can imagine that the German player thought “oops, stepped on somebody there, better keep quiet about it” rather than owning up, apologising, and getting booked or worse.
Considering it was Tommy Smyth, he probably gagged a little.
Actually, it wasn’t Tommy, it was Gray.
Time for kick off. This game has a lot to live up to!
Russia has looked good, but I’m pretty confident the Dutch will pull this one out. Russia has had horrible marking on set pieces and Van der Vaart has been sending in great balls.
Fairly evenly matched so far. Van der Saar’s been great in goal; don’t know how long that’ll last. Both sides have been fun to watch throughout the tournament and I don’t think I can take sides based on the gameplay I’ve seen so far this match.
Ooh… Nice. I think the game needed that.
Now the game needs the Dutch defenders to try to outrun the Russians. They’ve not been playing so hot the last 20 minutes.
Well it came late, but you could tell set pieces were going to cost the Russians.
A question for the more rules-savvy: Why would it matter the ball was in or out with Kolodin’s second yellow? Sure, if the ball was out then the Netherlands shouldn’t get a free kick, but a yellow card foul is still a yellow card. Players get sent off or get warnings for fouls that take place after the whistle all the time, why would this be different?
Yup, but the sloppy defending cost the Dutch. Twice.
DAMN!
Three times.
Damn. This tournament increasingly looks like it has “Italy” written on it.
Re the retracted yellow card, no it doesn’t matter whether the ball had gone out. Call me cynical, but it looked a bit like the referee realised after the act that he had booked the guy before, and was open to any way of getting out of it.
Did the ball even go out? I’ll have to look again, but it didn’t seem that the whole ball crossed the line.
Yes, it DOES matter. The player can’t be cautioned for an action that occurs after play has actually stopped, unless that action is cautionable regardless of whether play is in progress or not. Thus, for example, if he had hit the Dutch player, it would not matter. But cautioning him for an over zealous foul when the ball was already out of play cannot happen.
VERY correct refereeing, and good job that they conversed; of course, that’s what the headset is for.
Amazing win by Russia, though not undeserved. Where was the Dutch team that had played the first three games???
No way to know unless they had a camera right on the line. I had the same thought at the time, but really, very hard to tell without being right on the line.
I just checked the replays and it looked like the ball wasn’t out. However, the linesman may have had the better angle. One thing is for sure though, the Russian didn’t even touch the Dutch player so the yellow would have been sorely unjustified.
My DVR check reveals that the ball was in and there was no foul anyway.
Did your DVR check show a replay from a camera situated directly along the goal line? The replays shown on American TV showed no such camera angle.
