Online source for Vegemite?

Last Saturday, I scraped the last morsel of salty goodness from my final jar of Vegemite, and reluctantly shared it with my 3 year old daughter. I’ve never tried to buy it here in the US - I’ve always had luck with friends/coworkers heading to Australia and willing to bring back a few jars. Does anyone know of an online site that has Vegemite and reasonable shipping costs in/to the US? All the US based sites seem to be out of stock (possibly due to the whole FDA/folate flap last year), and the Australian/European sites charge big bucks ($30-50) for shipping. I like Vegemite, but not that much.

Have you tried www.thedrippingsofsatansass.com?

It’s in stock here at the marmite pantry, plus you can even listen to the vegemite song. They also offer cases and 6 packs of vegemite, if you want to stock up.

I’ve also heard that it’s available at Kroger’s and other supermarkets as well as at health food stores. I’ve seen it on the shelf at Publix Supermarkets, as well.

Good Lord, why do you want that?

Anywho, a simple google search led me to this site. They’re based in Arkansas, so shipping shouldn’t be that much a problem - bit expensive though. Only two sizes in stock: 235g jar for $6.95 plus about 8 bucks shipping, and a 2.5 kg tub! for $39.95 plus 11 bucks shipping. The shipping prices go down the more money you spend.

If you do the math for the shipping price breaks you can get 10 kg for under 200 bucks. That oughta last you for a while.

jjim, you cannot fathom how disappointed I was when I realized that wasn’t a real link.

Gap in the market!

This is our source: The Australian Catalogue Company. We were living in Australia when the U.S. had the “isn’t legal to import Vegemite” scare. I think most of the brick & mortar stores that used to stock pulled it from their shelves and never put it back. I’ve asked at a couple places and they say they will not stock it for the forseeable future. It probably just wasn’t a big enough money maker to bother with.

Now, if we can figure out how to get some Tooheys, my husband will be happy. They had it at Outback when we went a few months ago, but have since stopped carrying it.

I got a jar at Costplus World Market. Surely there’s one of those nearby in Boston?

Otherwise just go scrape the gunk out of the bottom of a tar can and you’ll be fine.

When did you get that? I’ve looked at the World Market near us (NC) and near my parents (FL) and neither stocked it anymore. They were one of the stores I asked that said they pulled it all during the whole FDA thing (as well as Publix, Kroger and Fresh Market). I haven’t looked in the last month or so, though…have they started carrying it again? That would be great news!!

I just got 2.5 kilos sent to me by the site Monkey listed. I was just about out from my previous 2.5 kilo bucket!! Whew!!

You won’t need any more after I’ve reported you to Child Protective Services!

Oh sorry, it was 3 or 4 years ago, at least. I saw it and figured I had to try it.

I couldn’t look at the jar for at least 6 months without gagging.

Vegemite is lovely! Marmite is slightly lovelier, IMHO.

Promite, not so much…

Hey; we got a half dozen lifetime supplies when we were over yonder several years ago. Got them free at fast food restaurants, about 0.5 oz to the lifetime. Let me know if you want one.

Did you try the Kiwi version of Marmite? It’s sweet! Even the memory of it makes me gag.

I tried an Aussie marmite once; didn’t care for it much.

Now I get the real deal from England. Yummy!

AFAIK, such a thing doesn’t exist. You probably were given the Kiwi one in disguise.

Indeed. It’s really hard to find Marmite in Australia. Most shops do not stock it, but have shelves and shelves of Vegemite. Most disappointing when I’m a Marmite fan from NZ.

Could be. It was given to me as a part of a sampler pack of all the mites, from a friend who grew up in Australia. It included something called “Mighty mite” and “aussie mite”. I prefer my vegemite from Kraft and my marmite from Best Foods.

Bovril is all right, too.

I like Vegemite better. Less drippy. But I’ll eat marmite in a pinch, I expect.

Acourse, that presumes I won’t end up with the mother of all heartburn afterward, my nearly 30 year old guts aren’t the same as the iron gut of a weeun. :frowning:

I remember when I had it for the first time, I troweled on a quarter-centimeter of the stuff, thinking it was like jam. Lovely. So was the expression on my Aussie cousins’ faces as they’d been expecting a rather different reaction.
