U.S. Doper needs Vegemite, help!

Sadly, in my misspent youth, I acquired a taste for the stuff. Can’t get it here, and I’m craving it so much I’d probably just use a spoon when I get some, who needs toast and butter after so long, right?

Right now, the best deal I can find on amazon is a 150 gram jar for US$8.29 plus another US$9.99 shipping. Fuck that.

Is there anyone down there who needs maybe $20 worth of stuff easily found around here that might like to trade? I’ll ship first, so no worries, right?

My family lived in Australia for 3 years, so they always have a jar around the house. (I like it too, but don’t remember to eat it very often)

Knowing my parents’ frugal nature, I am certain that they don’t pay anywhere near 8 bucks a pop for it, so I will ask them where they get it and let you know what they say…

Dude, HEB stocks the stuff. Look in the “International” aisle, next to the kosher foods and the British items. So does Vons, Ralphs and IIRC, Trader Joes.

No suggestion but just an “ignorance fought” confession: I honestly thought the FDA had a ban on Vegemite in the U.S., but turns out that’s an urban legend.

Closest to a suggestion I have: you could email Kraft and ask who the nearest retailer is that carries it in your area.

Any help is most welcome. Kraft pretty much denies the existence of their product over here.

I have a 455 gram jar of the stuff, hardly touched, with a use-by date of about 10 years ago.

(No, the stuff doesn’t go off: it dries out, which makes it a bit harder to spread, but no microrganisms will ever touch the stuff.)

Dude. That aisle in an RGV HEB is eight feet long. No Kosher, no British, just stale tubes of wasabi, fried rice mix, and canned Chinese food meant to be dumped on low grade chow mein. Sometimes, we get fortune cookies. Even during passover, nothing kosher. Ask me about the curry situation. I dare you.

I’m not positive, but I do believe I’ve seen it on the shelves of World Market.

How’s the curry?

Are you sure it’s Vegemite not Marmite? I see Marmite all over the place here, too, but I can’t remember ever seeing Vegemite. Maybe I saw it at World Market, but I’m not sure.

runner pat, you just made the list.

Everyone else-- I’m serious. I can’t find any way besides doing the gazillion percent markup to get some.

How about a 2.5 kg pail?

That’s what I got.

What’s the Swiss crap? I’ve yet to do the Marmite v. Vegemite taste test. I’ve only been exposed to Marmite, and I love the stuff.

Did I mention I live in REALLY south Texas? Corn masa and husks for tamales are on sale right now!

We have Vegemite in our supermarkets here. Let me check prices and get back to you. If it seems like an OK price to you, I’ll be happy to ship.
ETA: P.S. I had buttered toast with Vegemite for breakfast today.

Cenovis.

I’ve gotten Marmite at World Market (it was a gift for an Irish friend, who craves the stuff); I don’t think I saw Vegemite there, but I may be mistaken.

Interesting. I like the applicator tube. I’ll have to keep an eye out for it.

PM me an address. They sell the stuff at my local market. I’ll ship you a CARE package.

I was looking on the web on where to find Vegemite in the Chicago area, and apparently Cost Plus World Market is the place to look for it around here. I’ll have to go look again. I thought I had seen it there before but, for whatever reason, I didn’t buy it.

So worth looking there, I guess.

ETA: Although that post is from 2002, so who knows what they stock today.
