Ummm . . .ok, I guess. I kinda thought that was my point–that something this silly is worth so much energy and vitriol.
wring, the idea is to add a new one every couple of months are so, as mentioned in one of the threads discussing smilies. However, I am not planning on travelling back in time and doing this kind of thing for the past two years. For one thing, I’m Morlockphobic.
I thought you were complaining because we were only adding one smiley from all the submissions. But it seems like you disagree with the whole voting process?!?
What do you think would be a better way?
Let 'em ALL in! Let a thousand flowers bloom! Let the FREE MARKETPLACE OF IDEAS ALLOW A MILLION SMILIES TO ROAM THE BOARDS AND LET THE STRONGEST SURVIVE!!!
There can be only one.
Smilander
A new motion picture coming soon to a message board near you.
Guest Starring Sean Connery as some old guy who was the only decent actor in the flick.
Fenris
Fascist!
So which one is the new one?
Ten bucks says Sue is the person that will use the new smiley the most.
I am just pissed that there was no decent crying smilie to choose from.
Multitudes of frownies will have to do instead for now I guess.
Fenris - But how can you so belittle the great Christopher Lambert?
Drastic - If respecting the integrity of our space-time continuum is fascistic, then yes, count me amongst the comrades of the great D’Annunzio.
particlewill - expand your horizons! Visit more fora! Dare to travel beyond the confines of the BBQ Pit! (you might find the answer in ATMB or IMHO)
Ahhh- nold - I’d gotten the impression from this thread that after the voting was done, one smiley would be added. Period.
hence my dismay that so much work would be done to add one smiley.
But, if the plan is to add several over the next while, well, cool.
And I still want to see a ‘fucking smiley’
I think we should decide which smilie is the one in the time-honored tradition of Beyond Smiliedome: smilie a smilie combat.
Two smilies enter, one smilie leaves!
(OK, so Fenris did it first, but I just couldn’t resist…)
When Mark Burnett gets desperate …
Survivor: The Smilies
16 smilies travel to a desserted tropical message board. There they are subjected to grueling reward and immunity challenges (such as: which one of them best represents the true meaning of Schaudenfreude?). Every three days, one of them is eliminated (the tribe has smiled). The winner gets a new Saturn Vue, and a spot on the smiley board.
I am complaining that we’re only adding one new smiley. I don’t have a problem with the voting process itself, it seems quite fair. It just seems like a huge amount of trouble to go through for only one smiley.
Oh, and SPOOFE? Fuck you and the toothbrush you rode in on.
wring - well, my idea was to have another votation when we do it next time. Because someone may think of a new smiley idea in the meantime.
Sue Duhnym - I will point out that I’m doing most of the work here, and I don’t mind that we’re only choosing one smiley.
But I see several people saying that adding one smiley only is a waste of time. What is the # of smilies that make having this poll worthwhile? I see some people say a few, some people come out with a number and say three, some people say we should add all of them. I’m open to suggestions here. But once the suggestion has been made then I need to convince the other moderators/administrators that we should add more than one.
wring - actually now I’m thinking that my last post might not be 100% clear either. Here’s the idea:
May/June 2002 - 50 smilies proposed, votation is done, a smiley is added.
A couple of months after that: another submission period, voting, adding a smiley.
etc…
thank you for the clarification.
I’m fine w/selecting one now, (tho I can see some excellent uses for 2, understanding that ‘certain’ mods/admins are anti-smilie - would chocolate help?) and another in a while etc.
wring - not just moderators/administrators - there is a small portion of our membership that abhors smilies. If you look in the latest smiley poll there are several votes for “no new smilies”, and I would bet that those votes are actually under-represented because people that hate smilies would avoid such a poll like the plague.
I personally don’t like going to message boards that have too many smilies / graphics / images in signatures, it makes the text hard to read and people start substituting the pictures for intelligent discourse. Which is why I come to the SDMB in the first place - there is more emphasis on text and people learn to express themselves and write well.
Maybe I’m getting old but this old-fashioned approach suits me.
I don’t see the problem with adding 'em all. Those who don’t like smilies need not use 'em.
However, if the (temporary) chaos of all the new smilies being overused for a few weeks (and let’s face it. Whatever number of new smilies are added, it or they WILL be overused for a week or two. :smack: looks like the winner so far, and I guarantee that we’ll all be sick and tired of :smack: by about week three) is too daunting, then I’d suggest going with 5 and allowing in the top winner in each of the five polls.
Frankly, the amout of submissions should indicate the demand for new smilies. In addition, as someone who submitted several smilies, it’s kind of depressing to realize that I’ve got a 1 in 50 chance every three months to have a shot at having a smilie added. The odds are just to great against me. A 1 in 10 chance, however…
My first choice would be to add 'em all, but failing that, I’d be much happier with 5 new smilies added.

Many posters on this board are prone to smilie abuse. We want to make sure that any new smilie that gets adopted will be properly taken care of. This means that if you want new smilies, you’re gonna have to make sure that the new one gets fed and watered regularly, gets plenty of love, gets fixed when the time comes…and most important of all, THE SMILIE BOX NEEDS TO BE CLEANED! EVERY DAY! We in the staff are not going to be responsible for the new smilie (other than bringing it home), you posters are gonna have to take good care of it. And don’t let it die of neglect.
Dibs!! I get to feed it the first day!!!
(and of course forget to)
