It just seems like this place need a bit of a pick-me-up and something to get our minds off all the other things going on these days. I know, some of you think the smileys are annoying and I apolgize for bringing this up (not really :D), but I like them and many other dopers do too!
So Arnold, can we have another poll? Another long, drawn-out selection process of smileys? I’ve been thinking a smiley that shrugs it’s shoulders might be kind of cool. Or we could just vote on Smashie™ and let that be the end of it.
We just added the smackie, and it seems like people have been overusing it since. At the slightest “whoops” provocation, it appears. I understand it’s a novelty thing. But I think it’s excessive. As much as I like smilies-- really, I do; I even collect them-- we don’t really need another one.
If we can come up with a smiley that conveys a sentiment that comes up frequently, like the winkie or rolleyes, then I’m all for it. But it seems to me that the smiley suggestions of late have been for sentiments that aren’t at all common (such as Smashie and Smackie, and now Shruggie) and are being suggested simply because people think it’d be cool to have. The darn thing ends up being misused, and overused.
I mean no offense, but calls for new smilies like this make me wish there was a “hide smilies in all posts” option, like there is for sigs.
Let me backup AudreyK and say that unless the new smiley conveys a common sentiment better than type let’s not add a new smiley. If I remember correctly there was a bit of a similar debate surrounding the last added smiley so maybe we should have a poll on whether or not to add a new smiley before anything else.
Although I’ve used them before, will use them again, and often admire other’s uses of them overall I hate the little pissers.
Yeah, do we really need another one? You guys are like kids that have barely unwrapped their new toy before they’re clamoring for another one. We just added Smackie. That was what, back in April? It still looks fake to me, like it doesn’t belong here.
Let’s not add a smilie just to add a smilie!
Last time I voted in a couple of them just for the novelty factor (and to be a part of history!), but this time I think I’m resolved to mark my ballot for (read my lips) “NO NEW SMIILIES.”

I don’t particularly care one way or the other, as long as a) no animated smilies will be used on the SDMB, EVER, and b) the new smilie will not be overused. Which it will be, of course.
Maybe, when we add all those smilies, we ought to implement a maximum of, say, 10 smilies per post or something. Is that possible, Arnold?
Not to answer for Arnold (which is, inronically, exactly what I am doing…), but yes, you can limit the number of images per post. And since smilies are images, and the SDMB doesn’t allow images, than changing this setting effectively limits the number of smilies. I’ve had to increase it several times on my Board, especially when we had the Murder Trial of the Rolleyes Smiley, prosecuted by me, and defended by Fenris Jennings Bryan.
