Only ten timeouts today, Straight Dope! Well done!

I don’t think ten timeouts a day is good, but I do think you’re being a fucking knobstick. Just go away. Your stupid lawsuit idea would make that happen anyway, by destroying the board, so why don’t you just go and save the rest of us all the bother?

Say you click 50 links on this site in a row with no timeouts, then one click gives you a 30 second timeout. A few impatient fools will just remember that one click and forget about the 50 before. The rest of us will remember that it worked just fine 98% of the time, and when these threads come up, will say so.

Indeed - while others complain about the hole, we’re enjoying the donut.

But to be fair, most of the members here would eat a donut they found lying on the sidewalk.

That which is too uninteresting to be mentioned visited again today to work on my internet connection.

I look forward to the day that my connection is good enough for me to suffer a time out.

Does it have sprinkles on it?

Well, how old is this purported donut? Is it, say, very fresh and recently fallen, or old and having been trodden on previously? Ah, who am I kidding? A free donut’s a free donut.

Mmm, forbidden donut.

Now THAT would be a delicious irony indeed! A board saturated with hand-wringers, tree-huggers, and knee-gnawers turns out to be run by bottom-line capitalists. The ultimate practical joke. :stuck_out_tongue:

Good thing the board isn’t an airport then.

Yes - it isn’t an airport, or an ambulance, or an iron lung - because of that, a lower threshold of reliability might be tolerable. Of course perfection is always desirable.

But it’s MY iron lung. Don’t you get it? Without the Dope, there is no me. These 30 second timeouts are like 30 seconds of life just… wasted.

"But, they’re shooting at me! "

Oh shut up and eat your cotton.

Sure, but it must be one of the least reliable message boards out there on the internet.

There are other message boards on the internet? Why?
Seriously. No, it’s not by any means the least reliable - I know of several that periodically just don’t work, or disappear completely, for days at a time, then come back with a bunch of recent posts missing. They’re not anything like as big as the SDMB though, and they don’t charge a subscription.

I thought I just experienced a timeout. Turns out my internet connection had dropped - presumably some glitch in the router, or its power supply, or the line, or something at the other end. There are thunderstorms in the area today, so it might be related to bad weather. Fortunately I survived the incident, but I’m looking for a good lawyer, so I can sue the forces of nature, or perhaps the laws of physics.

It’s been pretty bad lately, compared to usual. But the thing that ticks people off, I think, is how this site compares to almost any other site one visits multiple times during the day. I can’t think of any that I go to regularly that has a timeout even once per month. And yet this one seems often to timeout multiple times a day.

Other sites, or other boards? I don’t know that much about the technology involved, but it seems to me that message boards and their like are inherently far, far less stable that other websites, because of their fluid nature. A boards is constantly in flux, changing every second. How could you compare that to a “static” webpage?

I think Fark.com and SomethingAwful.com are usually the sites used for comparison. SomethingAwful forums seem to pop up pretty quick, and they appear to have about ten times the posters. From the front page: “3,700 Users Logged In -
3,272 registered users logged in.” Heh, also from the front page “13 users banned today. 6,482 total users bans.”

See, that’s why they run so well. Their hamsters receive a healthy diet of human flesh.
