Only You

Sorry to do this, but I must appeal to you again for help. Off the top of your head, do you know of anyone who has done the song “Only You”? The only one I could think of was the Platters.

Yazz (AKA Yazoo) in 1982 (Album = Upstairs at Erics.)

Ok ok…different song…(Same name though…but you did say off the top of my head

It was covered by a white group, I think the same ones that did “On The Isle Of Capri”. I don’t recall the name of the group.
More recently Tammy Wynette did it. How’s that for a contrast?

Not exactly what I had in mind . . .

Apparently, we’ve reached that critical Do-you-know-all-the-versions-of-Only-You phase on this board.

Mrs. X knows it in several languages, so maybe someone’s recorded translations. (It’s not on the soundtrack.)

The Platters, perhaps?

Ringo Starr had a pretty groovy version too.

check out this list of 31 but a lot of them are near misses.

According to allmusic.com, a song with the name “Only You” appears on no less than 322 albums. At least 14 of those albums are Platters’ albums or collections of songs that include the Platters’ version. I’m sure a whole bunch of them are songs with the title “Only You” but no other similarities to the song in question. However, there are probably a bunch of covers of the Platters’ song on that list. Feel free to look through the list yourself at this link.

The only hit version I can think of was by Yazoo. Yazoo’s lead singer was, IIRC, Alison Moyet; Yazz was an entirely different act in the late 1980s (Yazz & The Plastic Population).

In the Uk…the FLYING PICKETS had a ‘hit’ with it…

Hey, no fair Bibliophage & Lance! She specifically asked for answers “off the top of your head”. Other information just shouldn’t be allowed.

(I’m joking, right?)

Ummmm . . . Montfort, did you read the entire op?

Thanks for your help, but the version by the Flying Pickets and Yazz/Yazoo is a different version than what I’m looking for. The Ringo version, on the other hand, is the right one. It’s definitely . . . Ringo, um, interesting. The problem I’m having is that whenever you do a search on the song title alone, you get all kinds of stuff . . . which is usually anything BUT the song I have in mind. (I’m trying to find a cover that I like a lot off of Napster . . . difficult w/o artist title.)

Let me be a little more specific, it begins–"Only you can make this world seem right, only you can make this darkness bright . . . " (Well, at least that’s what it sounds like, don’t shoot me if I’m wrong.)

It’s ok panamajack, I’ll allow them to do it THIS time . . .

I got lucky! Found out that Louis Armstrong did it once. But keep the suggestions coming.

I asked my father, who is in his 50’s, and he says he believes the Platters wrote it originaly.

Montfort was correct.
