Onslaught is one of those tower-turret building games where creepie-crawlies meander on screen through a maze and get blown to hell.
The first few times I couldn’t do better than 30 or 40 waves before being overwhelmed. Then I realized laser turrets link up and multiply damage, which allowed me to last long enough to create some combination turrets, and lo and behold I’m holding out until wave 400 or my RAM is overwhelmed from too many rockets flying around the screen.
This is a quality game. I’ve seen it before and it’s much fun. There’s a definite strategy to it as well.
I was getting into that until I read some of the forums and basically there’s one strategy that’s orders of magnitude better than anything else you can do. You just link up as many lasers as possible and have a combo on the end for laser rockets or something of the sort.
I’ve spent a lot of time with it, but I don’t like it as much as some others, such as Desktop TD and Protector.[ul]
[li]There’s no variety to the creeps. Each wave is just slightly stronger than the last, with no strengths or weaknesses. Eventually, a wave comes that’s too strong for your defenses, and every creep after that gets through. There’s no chance of an “easy” wave to catch your breath and earn enough money to build up your defenses.[/li][li]Some combos are much better than others. When I got a laser-missile combo set up, I didn’t have to do anything else for about fifty waves. That’s inexcusably boring.[/li][li]The documentation is woefully lacking. There’s no in-game indication of how to set up combos, and the last time I played it, I don’t think there was anything even on the instruction page about the advanced turrets. I never was able to figure out the use of “combo only” turrets; it didn’t seem worth the trouble.[/li][/ul]
There was another thread recently about these kind of games and I can’t find the damn thing…little help?
The combo-only turrets are explained on the forum associated with the game. They are somewhat useful, but I invariably find that by the time you’ve killed enough creeps to unlock this special turret the lag time is so high you can’t get them to work properly.
