Belkar: “Back me up and I’ll cut a path through these guys.”
Cleric: “Sounds good.”
Belkar: “Wait, did I say ‘path’? I mean a five-lane blacktop highway with a two-lane service road — and I’m packin’ a fist full of tokens and a radar detector.”
So is the author a doper? Because we just had that thread a short while ago where everyone - or at least many of us - expressed that he was dragging things out a little too long, and suddenly we have things happening and the strip being put up a lot more frequently than it was for a long while.
I doubt it; he’s got his own forum full of complaints.
I know I’m the odd man out but I’ve been okay with the pacing. I am ready for the plots to dovetail again, but he had to dig the hole nice and deep for the characters. The little adventures they’ve been having in the meantime have been snappy enough that I haven’t been concerned about the strip falling onto the webcomic eternal plot treadmill.
Great to see the Belkster back in action, though I must say I really loved his trippy dream imagery. So, what are the odds that faked character development is going to turn into genuine development down the road without him realizing it?
On a side note, what was the Oracle going to say about Vaarsuvius?
Belkar had originally asked if he would cause the death of Roy, Miko, Miko’s horse, Vaarsuvius or the Oracle. The second time Belkar met the Oracle he said the Oracle’s prophecy hadn’t come true.
So the Oracle claimed that Belkar had caused Roy’s death by indirect means. When Belkar disputed this, the Oracle went on to say that Miko was dead and Belkar had also indirectly caused her death. Then he argued that Miko’s horse might also be described as dead due to Belkar’s actions. Then he says “And as for the elf-” when Belkar interrupts him.
Based on the direction of the conversation, the Oracle must have been about to make some claim that Belkar was the cause of Vaarsuvius’ death.
Vaarsuvius, leaving his pals behind and being obsessed with his magic not being useful.
Haley, dead or dying at this point.
Durkon and Elan, out to sea (literally) searching for Haley and company.
Belkar, back, back, back!
That’s a DMs nightmare, that is. Toss in some side characters like Celia and such and I figure the next 100 strips is about bringing the team back to one place.
I suspect Vaarsuvius is going to be off stage until they get to the next gate and her place on the team is probably going to be taken by Celia. Haley is going to be rescued next strip by Belkar and we’ll stay with them recovering Roy’s body so that they can get in trouble again there and Durkon and Elan show up just in time to save the day. Roy gets raised and they’re ready to move on to the next gate.
That’s just extrapolating based on the laws of narrative causality which admittedly OotS subverts a bit but usually not that much. I’d estimate everyone but Vaarsuvius is back together within twenty-five strips.
Oh, and they’re going to have to cut back to Xykon and Redcloak at some point here. Maybe I should add three strips onto that estimate for them.
That’s strange, the art has been changed. But the guy in the blue shirt had a transparent sword in three panels, you just saw the outline, and could see his boot through it.
