Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising

That co-op earlier was alot of fun. I especially enjoy the fact that if you are manning the 50-cal on the back of the jeep, you can shoot the driver and passenger in the backs of their heads. Sorry about that one SenorBeef

Also, it is near impossible to accurately hit anything with the SAW, but man is it fun to just go to town with covering fire.

It was reasonable self defense on your part, since I flipped the jeep more than once onto your head.

I just ordered this game, couldn’t resist. OFP was so much fun. I keep reading reviews that mention 4-player co-op, I assume you can play with 2 human players and 2 AI, or something like that? You don’t NEED 4 human players do you?

That’s right. You always have a 4 man team. If you don’t have 4 people, you get bots to fill it out.

Coop is really fun, I’ve done almost the whole campaign with 3 people now, hoping to get a fourth.

Of course, the campaign is really short for a game that has very little multiplayer replayability. OFP 1 and Arma have enjoyed huge mission making communities due to the powerful and flexible creation tools - I hope OFP is the same. I know they plan to release frequent DLC, but this game would be helped massively by an active content creating community.

Well, got it for my PC, played it, had fun. Made it through the first mission on hardest difficulty, the second one is giving me a little more trouble. One thing that irritates me is with the time factor thrown in, it’s not so “sandbox” because you have limited time to cover the distance to the next objective so you pretty much have to go in as straight a line as possible.

I have a GeForce GTX 250 card and 4GB of RAM on Windows XP, running 1650x1080. Everything ran smooth on highest detail. Some have criticized the graphics, but to me the graphics look great. It’s not going to look as good as an on-rails shooter like COD4. I’m not all into textures and polygon counts, but I know when I like what I see. Great outdoor engine, except the grass looks blocky.

The game definitely lacks polish. Driving is frustrating when you can only look straight ahead. Surely they will address that in the first patch. In the pre-mission screens there exists what looks like an inventory screen where you can select loadouts, but no such luck. You can only examine what’s there, not move it around. And why do there have to be so many keyboard commands? I guess I like all the capabilities, but for example why does there have to be a special key just for calling artillery?

AI teammates are frustrating, they don’t seem to follow orders well. I usually tell mine to hold fire until I fire and get into the /\ formation behind me, whatever that’s called. Using the radial menu definitely isn’t smooth for me yet. I do like that you automatically report soldiers and vehicles you spot in your binoculars. But why do you create a soldier name before starting the campaign if they’re going to call you something else during the campaign?

Played with the editor a bit, didn’t take me too long to put down a squad and a Cobra helicopter next to it so I could practice flying. But when you test-play a mission from the editor, why do you have to redefine all the controls again??? Arrgh.

I think overall I liked the feeling of being part of a squad in OFP1. In this game you command right away.

I think with a patch or two and/or community tweaks and missions/campaigns this could be a very fun game.

I got it too. I prefer the radial menu on Crysis. Hit the middle mouse button (got it set to the back button on mine) and move the mouse in the direction you want. Incorporate a click mechanic like NWN and it would be a hell of a lot easier and more intuitive than what’s there now, IMHO. Graphics are decent. The whole being unable to look around while driving is retarded. Calling in artillery is cool  Was getting my ass handed to me until I stopped playing like I’m in Left 4 Dead.

Here’s a dumb question. When you search a dead body and the menu showing their possessions pops up, how do you get rid of it?? Use, Esc, mouse clicking, nothing works. I hit every key on the keyboard. I just played the single-player mission where you assault the lighthouse and while I was looting a body and trying to get out of the menu, a truck-full of PLA drove up behind me and kicked my ass! :frowning:

BTW, here is a good graphics config thread with a tweak to let you sharpen up the textures quite a bit, and at distances too: Games | Forum | EA Answers HQ | EN

Back up your config file first. 4th page has a version of the config you can copy and paste (be sure to use the After config, not the Before.) You’ll also have to change the resolution numbers (1650x1080) to whatever value is appropriate on your PC. Don’t forget to mark the file read-only after editing.

And here are the codes for 7 bonus missions: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/operationflashpoint2/hints.html

It’s always so dumb when tweaking an ini file can improve a game dramatically, since the developers could just do it themselves. I remember when Oblivion came out a few ini tweaks made the game both run smoother and look a lot better - and yet how many people playing the game would’ve stumbled across that file? 10-20%? And none of the console users. Meanwhile the other 80%+ of the fanbase is having an inferior experience that the developer could’ve improved by having better default ini settings.

As far as the graphics go - they’re good, but nothing great. They certainly could be better. My system is nothing special but I can run it maxed out with horsepower to spare. The scope is more impressive than the art - looking across a valley where you can see square miles of stuff is impressive.

Of course as you can see the PC version looks a lot better than the console versions, but it could definitely look better - the graphics processing power is there to spare. Keep in mind that the PC images are scaled down to low res there to make a direct comparison - running it at the common 1680x1050 res would give more than twice the resolution than in those pictures.

I found out that you can’t use a FUCKING JOYSTICK to fly their retardedly modelled helicopters, which is incredibly lame. Flying helicopters is my favorite thing to do in these types of games.

I’m going to chalk this up as another victim of how consoles and programming for the lowest common denominator is ruining gaming. This could’ve been something great, but all of the console compromises are very evident and ruin the experience. There’s still fun to be had here, but it’s a shell of what it could be. I only hope they give serious effort to patching the PC version into being good.

Wow those comparison shots are shocking.

Sucks to be a console gamer

Sucks to be a gamer in general, since the lowest common denominator is dragging us all down.

Played OFP2 co-op for about 3 hours last night with a friend of mine, it’s really a blast having another teammate that has some brains! I used the LAN game functionality to connect directly to his IP address. We played through the first 2 co-op missions and 2 or 3 of the single-player missions, plus tried an attack/defend scenario where I had to defend an airfield from my friend’s team, it was a big hectic battle. We also played around with some of the vehicles, there aren’t a huge number of them, but I can see they will be fun. The M1A1 is an impressive display of power.

I figured out why I couldn’t exit the menu when searching bodies. You have to the “E” key defined as primary or secondary for the “Use/Open” action.

Also, I’ve found that when the AI won’t respond quickly to Move commands, there is a “Move Quickly” command that seems to get their attention much better.

I’m playing it on a SD TV at the moment which makes it difficult as I really can’t see what I’m shooting at.

Good game though. I agree that the time element in some of the missions takes away from the sandbox side of things. I definitely enjoy the missions a lot more when I have time to do things how I want.

I’m going to post this in this thread too since the people in this game would probably be interested in this:

Quick heads up, just noticed that steam has arma 2 on sale for $25 (half off) as a weekend sale. Which means it’ll only be for a few more hours at most I think. I’m going to take a leap and hope they fixed some of the technical problems with patching and go ahead and grab it.

Don’t worry, at 1680x1050 you can’t see what you’re shooting at either! Just a couple dozen pixels or so. I find myself shooing more at movement than at someone’s head or body. I think the engagement ranges in this game are fairly realistic, but even a high-res display can’t display a human figure that sharply at that distance, not enough pixels.
